Anna- 21 Robert- 23 Alaric- 9 Margaret- 64
I could not seem to catch my breath, unable to hear anything else my husband has said. I knew he was still talking, explaining things to me, but I couldn't hear him over my heart beat and the ringing in my ears. I could not seem to wrap my head around it all, I couldn't have kids, would never be able to hold my precious baby in my arms. As my hearing slowly came back I could tell my husband was trying to get my attention. "I'm sorry, what were you saying?"
"I was asking if you were OK, you spaced out on me for a little there."
"I'm OK I guess, it's just hard to comprehend. He said I was infertile?" I asked, trying to wrap my head around everything.
"Yeah that's what he said, you can call him or go see his if you want to. But it's OK, I still love you, and we can always adopt if you want. Or we could find a surrogate." He said, hugging me to his chest.
"I really don't want to talk about this right now, I just want to forget." I told him, fully crying now.
"Shh, honey, we're going to be okay." He rubbed my back comfortingly as I continued to cry. "Why don't we make an appointment with an adoption agency and see what our options are. You would be an amazing mother and I'm sure there are plenty of kinds who need parents." What he said made sense, so I nodded my head. My heart still hurts, but I desperately want to be a mother.
"OK, I guess that's our best option at this point." I said, pulling away and drying my eyes. "Let's do it." I said smiling up at him.
"Let's do it." He repeated with a smile of his own. From that point on we started all the paperwork. After our first appointment with the adoption agency we had a ton of homework to do and several things to fill out. We even had a list of things that would have to change in our home to make it suitable for a child. I had so much fun getting the spare room set up. Having it repainted and some of the bare essentials put in since we weren't sure if we were adopting a boy or girl. We had decided on age range, about 6-10, someone a little older since my husband did not want to deal with a baby, but young enough that I could nurture them and help them grow.
We also decided to adopt from one of our local orphanages rather then from overseas or anything, since there were plenty of kids in the US that need homes too. When the day finally came to go to the orphanage for the first time I was nervous and excited at the same time. My leg was shaking the whole ride over and before we climbed out of the car my husband had to tell me to calm down. "What if they all hate us?" I asked Robert.
"Relax, it's our first time here, and even if they don't like us I'm sure they'll warm up to us." He said as he climbed out of the car. We walked up the stairs and I knocked on the door. As we stood there waiting for someone to answer I could hear yelling from inside.
"Alaric, stop, you know you're not supposed to answer the door by yourself." I heard a woman yell right before the door opened. I had to look down slightly as it was a little boy who had opened the door.
"I'm guessing you're Alaric." I said, kneeling down to his height. "I don't believe you're supposed to be opening the door." I said disapprovingly.
"I'm sorry, I was just really excited. Are you the lady here to take one of us home?" He asked excitedly.
"Alaric, what have I told you." A woman said as the door opened farther and I stood up. "Sorry about him, I'm Margret and you must be Robert and Anna. Why don't you come on in?" She said, motioning us inside.
