Today is the day! I thought excitedly. Today was the day that I went to the orphanage and signed the papers that would officially make Alaric all mine. His birthday was a couple days ago and I got him a big cake that we shared with everyone at the orphanage before I took him to the movies and to the park. We had so much fun together and it took everything in me not to tell him that he was going to be coming home with me today. I pulled up to the orphanage and grabbed my purse, taking the steps two at a time to get to the door quicker.
Margaret opened the door and ushered me inside, taking me straight to her office. "I wanted to get started before any of the other kids saw you and before Alaric comes in." She said as she motioned for me to sit in one of the chairs in front of her desk. "So there's some things we need to discuss about Alaric that I probably should have told you sooner, but I don't like telling parents until they're sure they want to adopt. So I have to ask, are you one hundred percent sure Alaric is the one you want to adopt?" She asked very seriously.
"I am, I swear on my life I have never been more sure of anything in my life." I told her.
"Ok. Then let's get everything started and let Alaric know the good news.: She said with a smile. She pulled out a folder, setting it on her desk and pulling a stack of papers out. "I'll need some info from you here and you'll have to sign a few places as well." She said, sliding the papers towards me. I carefully read everything over before signing at all the little flagged areas. It took almost an hour for me to get through everything but when I signed on the last line I was more than excited. I slid the papers back over to her and relaxed in my chair. She quickly flipped through to make sure I didn't miss anything before putting the papers back in the folder and in her filing cabinet.
"Can I go get Alaric now?" I asked her.
"Yeah, go ahead." She smiled. "Just come back in here so I can talk to the two of you before you leave." I got up and rushed out the door, eager to find Alaric and tell him the good news. I found him in the rec room reading on his favorite chair. He must have heard me come in cause he looked over at me, a smile lights up his face. He closed his book and ran over to me, giving me a tight hug.
"Hey Alaric, what are you up to?" I asked him as I pulled away.
"Just doing some reading, trying to finish the book you gave me." He said, holding up the Harry Potter book I had given him for his birthday.
"Oh, well you can finish it at home tonight if you'd like, but you really should be packing." I said, unable to contain my smile. He looked confused for a second before it fully registered what I was saying.
"You're adopting me?" He asked, the excitement leaking from his voice.
"Just finished signing the papers with Margaret." I told him proudly. "Now come on, we've got to pack." I told him.
"It'll take 5 minutes, just don't go anywhere!" He yelled as he ran off. I slowly followed him, taking my time so he could pack. Once I got to his room he was trying to stuff everything in his bag that was already overflowing with stuff. I couldn't help but laugh as he tried to get everything to fit.
"Let me help you with that." I told him. I went over and pulled everything out of the bag, folding it nicely and stacking it back in so it all fit. Once everything was in we zipped it up and headed back downstairs. "Margaret just wants to talk to us quickly and then we can head home, okay?" I asked him. He simply nodded and headed for her office. Once we were both inside I shut the door and sat down, Alaric in the seat next to me with his suitcase by the door.
