"Ezra?" Gram calls out.
I quickly finish writing the word I was on and run into the kitchen. "Do you need something?"
She gestures for me to sit one of the empty chairs and I sit in the one to the right.
"Am I in trouble?"
"I don't know, sweetie. Are you?" My eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Madeline wasn't here yesterday evening and she isn't here today. Is everything okay with you two?"
I sigh and put my head in my hands.
"What did you do or did she do something?" She continues making a ham sandwich for both of us.
"We had an argument during school yesterday and we just needed some space afterwards, so neither one of us said something that we would regret or make the situation worse." I shortly explain.
"Well that was very mature of both of you."
I smile, "I learned that from you, Grams, but I can't take the credit. Madeline was the one who said it out loud."
She smiles. "She is good girl for you."
I nod. "I am going to finish something and then go see her to talk out the fight we had yesterday. Is that okay?"
Grams nods. "Tell her she is welcome over here anytime if she needs someone to talk to."
"I will," I state and grab a sandwich. "Thank you!" I jog back to my room and finish the letter in ten minutes.
I exit the house and call our next door neighbor to keep an eye on Grams. Gram doesn't know that I call Martha to keep her company when I know I won't be back for a while. I head to the police station to find that one officer I know. What was his name? Did he tell me his name? I have a really bad memory. I get to the station in close to fifteen minutes. Thank God, Grams finally trusts me with her car. I step inside the station and my blood turns into butterflies. I shuffle my feet up to the front desk and clear my throat.
The man sitting at the desk raises an eyebrow. "Can I help you?" He says gruffly.
"Um, I need to see one of the police officers. He knows me." I state and clear my throat again.
"What's the police officers name?"
"Well, if he told me his name, I do not remember, sir."
"And he knows you?" He questions crossing his arms.
"Yes, sir."
The officer is about to say something when he turns to his right. I follow his line of vision and see the officer I know.
"Ezra? What are you doing here?" He asks.
I hold up the envelope in my hand. "Instead of visiting Josh, I wrote him a letter. Can you get it to him?"
He nods. "I'm glad you aren't going to visit him. It isn't safe for you to go to a jail by yourself to visit someone that you don't know."
I nod and laugh a little. "That's what I told my girlfriend."
He smiles, "it was good seeing you, Ezra. If you ever need someone to talk to or need anything come find me."
"What's your name?" I ask.
"Bob Red. Just ask for Officer Red."
I nod and hand him the letter. "Have a good day, Officer Red."
"You too."
After thirty minutes of driving, I arrive at Madeline's house. I knock on the door and her dad answers it. "Ezra, it's nice to see you again!" I smile and he motions for me to come in. "You are welcome to go up to Madeline's room just make sure the door stays open at all times."
"Yes, sir."
I climb the spiral steps and stop in her doorway. She is lying on her bed in her black rimmed glasses and her ninja turtle onesie that I bought and playing on her phone. I lightly knock on the wood and she looks up at me. Her eyes widen for a second and then she groans. "You could have at least warned me that you were coming over! I haven't showered in like three day!"
I smile, "but you like surprises." I step a little closer to her.
"Yeah," she sighs and stands up from her bed.
"And you like me. Maybe not too well right now, but I hope you can forgive me for yesterday." I state and step a little closer.
She erases the space between us and wraps her arms around my neck. "Of course I still like you, Ezra. How can anyone not like you?"
"I could name quite a few reasons."
She slaps my arm. "Don't you dare, Ezra Lucas Adams." She glares at me.
"Okay, Madeline Rome White." She scrunches her nose up and I smile. That was so adorable. I kiss her nose. "What?"
"Nothing," she shakes her head. "I am going to take a shower. You can go socialize downstairs or hang out in here. When I'm done we are going to talk everything out, okay?"
"Sounds like a plan," I say and she quickly kisses me.
