I rushed out of the library. I could feel the color of my eyes change into a beautiful purple. I needed to control it. If the pack came outside and saw this, then I would be doomed. I cried out, and sunk into my seat. Maybe I was being a little too dramatic, but how would you feel if you found out your best friend, who was also your cousin, who you also felt like was a sister to you, had been kidnapped. I suspect you wouldn't feel peachy either, would you? I heard the pack come, and smelled the confusion coming off them when they saw my car was still here.
Come on! Get your eyes under control! I thought to myself, as I heard Stiles come over. Not feeling any change in my eyes, I reached into the passengers seat, and found some sun glasses that used to be my moms. I put them on just as Stiles knocked on my window.
"Katy, why are you still here, I thought you left like ten minutes ago." He said.
"Yeah, I'm just looking for something," I lied.
"What?"
"Hm?"
"What are you looking for?"
My dignity. "My wallet!"
"Do you need any help finding it?"
"Nope! I just remembered I left it at my house. Bye Stiles!"
"Bye?" he muttered as I drove away.
When I reached the house, Izzy, James, and Andy where all watching that stupid show about about a sponge underwater. I think it's called Spongebob Squarepants. I honestly don't really care. I ra past them and down the hall into my room.
"Hey Katy! How was the libra—" I cut Izzy off by slamming the door to my room.
'Teenagers,' I hear her mutter, and I roll my eyes. She has no idea.
I have to figure out how to save Mia. Who knows how long it would take the McCall pack to find the Moon Pool. They barely even knew what they where looking for. I hadn't originally planned to actually look for the Moon Pool, since it would probably be in the ocean, and that was a pretty dangerous place right now, but I didn't see any other way. I yawned, and looked at the time.
Eleven o'clock.
From outside my door, I heard Izzy telling the boys to get to bed. I sighed. If I went out searching now, I would never be able to find the Moon Pool where Mia was being held captive. First off, I would be to tire, and most likely not notice if I actually saw a entrance to another Moon Pool, but it would be way to dark to see. It's already dark enough in the water while the sun was out. The only reason we had light in Atlantis was because of how the sun hit certain parts of the kingdom, and the bright lights that managed to reach even the darkest corners. Unfortunately, I doubted the part of the ocean that was here actually had those lights.
I decided to not even get changed. I had practically worn pajamas to school, so I didn't see any problem sleeping in them. Climbing into bed, I heard the door of my room open.
"You still awake?" I heard Izzy say.
"Yeah," I said.
She sat down at the edge of the bed, and looked around my room. "Wanna tell me why you seemed so upset when you got back tonight?"
"Not really," I said. Izzy sighed, and got up, heading towards the door, when I stopped her. "Izzy?"
She turned around. "Yes?"
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Ask away," She said.
"What would you do if some people that you knew where getting into huge trouble."
Izzy looked at me, "I would report them."
"That's not what I meant." I told her.
"Then, what do you mean?" She asked.
"I mean... God, how do I put this? So, these kids in school, are getting themselves into some trouble." When Izzy looked at me, I quickly realized how that sounded. "Not like the bad trouble! It's actually a really good type of trouble, you know what I mean?"
"Not really," She admitted.
"You know, what? Never mind. Sorry I bothered you." I said.
"Katy, I'm here to help. Tell me the rest of what you were going to say."
"Okay... well, the thing is, the type of trouble their getting into, I'm afraid they are going to get hurt, and it's not like I can actually reveal myself to them. Not the mention the fact that—" I cut myself off before I could mention Mia. I needed time to figure that out.
Izzy thought for a moment. "Do you care about them?"
"What?"
"These people. Do you care about them?"
"They were the first people that were nice to me. They might even be my friends. I just don't want them getting hurt."
Izzy smiled at me. "Listen, if you really do care about them, then I would help them."
"Really?" I asked her.
"You said the kind of trouble their getting into is the kind of trouble that helps people?"
I nodded, glad she understood.
"Then, yes, I would help them." She told me.
"But what if they figure out what I am?"
"If they are really your friends, they won't care what you are."
"You know, you're actually really good at giving advice."
"Glad to hear that."
"Night Izzy," I said.
"Goodnight, Katy." Izzy turned off the lights, and I thought about what she said.
Maybe I can actually help them instead of pretending I believe their crappy lie of this being a video game. That was my last thought as I drifted into a dreamless sleep.
When I woke up it was already twelve. I got out of bed and practiced curling my hair. I put on some black leggings and a blue t-shirt. I was going to go looking for the Moon Pool, so I didn't feel the need to get all dressed up. I walked into the kitchen, and Andy ran into.
"Andy? What are you doing?" I asked her.
She giggles. "Me and James are playing Hide and Seek!"
"Ohhhh. Who's winning so far?"
"Me! But don't ask James! He'll say it's him. Buts it is me! I swear!" She told me.
"Okay, well, I would hide if I were you. I think I hear him coming."
Andy's eyes widened, and she ran off to find a hiding space. Not seconds later, James came in.
"Katy! Have you seen Andy?" He asked.
"Yeah, actually. She just left. I think she went that way," I said, pointing in the opposite direction of where Andy actually went.
"Thanks!" He said and ran off in search of his friend.
I chuckled, and reached into the kitchen cabinet pulling out some Lucky Charms. I finished eating them as Izzy came in the room.
"Morning swim?" I asked her.
"Yeah," She then grinned. "You slept late."
I shrugged, "What can I say, a girl needs her beauty sleep."
"Well, what do you have planned for today?" She asked me, sitting at the table.
"Well, I was going to go out for a swim, but if you need help doing anything I could just stay home and do it tomorrow." I told her.
"No, I'm just taking Andy and James to some trampoline park today, so I should be just fine by myself."
I looked at her, "Thank you so much for doing this."
"You're welcome, now something tells me this swim isn't going to be a normal swim."
"Is it ever?"
She smiled, "No, but still. Can you just put your plate in the dishwasher before you go?"
"Of course," I said.
I put the plate in the dishwasher as Izzy asked, and turned back to her.
"Hey, I might be getting home pretty late tonight, or pretty early. I honestly don't know how long this will take. Just, don't wait for me to get home to go to bed, okay?"
"Fine by me," Izzy responded.
I walked to my closet, and made my way to the Moon Pool. I closed my eyes, and let out a breath of air. When I opened my eyes, I smiled, then jumped into the water. I didn't wait to transform before I started swimming.
I felt my pace quicken as my tail fully formed. Instead of going down the path that lead to the lake like I usually did, I went down the salty passageway. When I emerged from the passageway, I saw a school of fish swimming by some coral. It had been a while since I had seen coral and so many colorful fish, but I swam past them. I had to focas on my task. I would find Mia if it was the last thing I did.
After a while of swimming, I felt any hope I had of the fact my cousin was alive drift away. It had been hour, and there had not been one sign that there was another Moon Pool in the tiny town. Just as I was about to head back, I saw some coral. Now, I know that coral isn't that rare, but this coral seemed to be blocking something. Almost like a entrance.
I swam over to it, and pulled back the coral. Sure enough, I was right. There was a dark tunnel that seemed to go on forever. I glanced behind me, trying to find anything that would make this a trap. When I didn't see anything, I swam into it. Despite the fact that it seemed to go on forever, it actually only took a few minutes to get to the surface without using the boost I usually used to go fast underwater.
Once I surfaced, I looked around the cave. It was much darker than the one in the house. Instead of dusty looking stones, the walls were a dark gray stone, that seemed clean. Though, I suspect nobody actually cleaned it. I pulled myself up onto land once I realized nobody was here, and used the necklace to get my legs back.
I got up, and walked around the cave. I would've believed nobody had been here for hundreds of years, except for one tiny thing. There was blood in a corner. I could tell it had been spilt recently, as it wasn't dry yet. The person that had taken Mia must have gone to a great extent to clean this place, to bad they missed that spot. I looked for an exit that wouldn't lead to water, and felt like crying when I didn't see one. I walked back to the water, when something caught my eye. One of the stones was a lighter shade gray than the others. Not much lighter, but enough for me to notice the difference.
I walked over to it, and put my hand on it. Immediately, a wall opened up next me. I hesitated a second, then realized it wouldn't stay open forever, and if the person who lived was out for a swim right now, I did not want to be here when they got back. I ran into tunnel, and heard it shut behind me.
Immediately, another door opened. I walked out, and realized I was in house. No. This was more like a cottage. It was extremely messy, and it seemed like a fire had started here. For a moment I wondered if it was the old Hale house, but then remembered how big their house had been. This was definitely not it. It was extremely quiet here, but once I actually listened to my surroundings, I heard the sound of muffled breathing behind a door.
"Mia?" I called as I opened the door.
The breathing seemed to stop, as I opened the door farther. The sight before me nearly made me faint.
Mia was there, but she had deep cuts all over her body. She looked sick, and I realized it had probably been over three weeks since she had been in water. Blood was still coming out of some cuts, and I saw more bruises cover her body.
"Oh my God," I cried.
Slowly, my cousin looked up, and I could see how tired she was. I ran over to her, and started to undo the ropes that were holding her, and took off the duct tape that was keeping her from speaking.
"Katy?" She whispered.
"I'm here," I said. "I'm right here."
"It hurts."
"I know." I could feel tears form in my eyes. Mia was one of the strongest people I knew. To see her so broken and hurt made me feel sad, but it also made me angry. I wiped the tears out of my eyes. I knew how Mia hated any form of pity or sympathy. That included crying for her. Once I got her out of here, I would come back and beat the person that did this to her until he felt just as much pain as he made my cousin feel.
"Katy, don't," She muttered, probably knowing what I was thinking.
"He deserves it," I argued.
"Katy, please." She cried.
"Fine," I sighed, once I got the final rope undone. I lifted Mia to her feet, and could feel how skinny she had gotten. I didn't care what Mia said. I would make this person suffer. "Do you know when he will get back?"
"He usually gets back at twelve in the morning, then he leaves until one in the afternoon so he could feed me.
"Okay, I think it's about eight right now, so we have a few hours." I told her.
Mia stopped for second before we reached the door. "We can't go back through the Moon Pool. He might come back early, and then he'll see us."
I nodded knowing she was right. "Do you think I could carry you?"
Despite Mia's condition, she managed to look at me like I'd grown a second head. "What?"
"Do you think I could carry you? It'll take hours to make it just one mile with you in this condition."
Mia let go of me, though I could tell it caused her pain. "Okay, let's do this."
I knelt to the ground, and put my arms out so that she could sit into them, instead of having to jump into them. When she was in a comfortable position, I stood up, and started to walk fast, since that would cause Mia the least pain.
Once we almost fully hidden from the view of the cottage, I heard the sound of of heavy breathing. It was distant but it was there. It came from the direction of the cottage. Mia must've noticed it as well, because she suddenly tensed up in my arms.
"He's early," she whispered.
My eyes widened realizing the breathing was coming from the man that had taken her.
"Mia," I said.
"Yes?"
"I'm going to have to run, tell me if I'm causing you to much pain, okay?"
Before Mia could respond, I heard the door to cottage open.
"Hey! That's my prisoner you bi—" I didn't hesitate at all. I took off in a full sprint, and could hear the man do the same thing. Unfortunately for him, I had some of the best royal guards train me to fight on land. Of course, it was thanks to Mia, I managed to get so fast as every time we were onland, we would play tag.
The mans pace began to slow down, but mine didn't. I had to get Mia as far away as possible from her prison. After a few minutes of sprinting, I still didn't feel tired, yet Mia tugged on my shirt. I looked around, and didn't see anybody, so I slowed me pace back to speed walking.
"What is it Mia?" I asked her.
"I can—" Mia's breath hitched before she continued. "I can feel a cut open back up. Can we slow down a bit?"
I nodded, "Doesn't seem like anybody's here, so I guess we could slow down for a little bit."
Mia let out a sigh of relief. "How much longer until we get to... where exactly are we going?"
"The mermaid safe house that's in Beacon Hills."
"Makes sense," she said. "How's Aunt Elizabeth?"
Elizabeth was my moms name, though she liked to be called Lizzie. Mia had always liked to annoy Mom, so she called her by her formal name, occasionally she called her your majesty, which usually results in her nearly losing her head. Mom always hated being formal.
"She's dead," I said, my breath getting caught on the word dead.
"What? Dead? That... that can't be. You're telling me that now my only Aunt is that freaking psychopath?"
"Unfortunately," I admitted.
"Katy, just remember she's in a better place now." That was it. No 'I'm sorry for your loss.' That's what I loved about Mia. She always hated sympathy and pity for herself, and always felt that other people felt the same way, but were just to nervous to say it. So she never said those kinds of things when somebody lost a loved one. Mia probably knew exactly what I was going through. Like me, Seraphina had also killed her parents right in front of her while they were on vacation. Her mother, Aunt Melody, was my mother and Seraphina's sister.
"I know."
"How's James taking it?" Mia asked.
"Pretty well for a six year old. I honestly don't know how he's doing so well."
"How are you taking it?"
I hesitated. "Okay, I mean, I saw my mom die Mia. I watched as the life faded from her eyes, as we became orphans. It's just hard to except reality I guess. I'm just glad you're alive."
Mia managed a smile, but I felt her wince as she did it. I was about to say something else when I heard a twig snap.
"Katy..."
The man stepped out from behind a tree. I didn't realize that I had been walking slow enough for him to catch up to us.
"Hello pretties." He smiled at us, but it wasn't a nice one. It was the kind of smile you would see the villain give the hero right before they killed them.
I took off running once again, this time faster then the last. I could only hope Mia was okay with all of this.
"Mia, you okay? Should I slow down or..." a knife landed in tree I had just ran past.
"Goddammit! Don't slow down! Run Katy, run!" Mia said as loud as she could, and I could hear the fear in her voice.
I continued to run, and even tried to pick up my pace some more. Trees flew by as I ran. I could feel some of Mia's cuts open up, but I figured we would just fix her when we got home. If I slowed down now, the man might just manage to send a knife through me head. Stumbling over a log, Mia cried out in pain.
"I think I'm gonna be sick," she said right before she threw up on me. I had nearly forgotten she hadn't touched water for a while. How could I be so stupid? She's probably got a fever.
Another knife landed on the ground next to me, and this time I slowed down enough to pick it up. I quickly put the knife in my pocket, then adjusted Mia so I could continue to run easily.m
In the far distance, I could see a clearing that lead to what looked to be a large lake. Wait. A large lake! This was the lake that lead to the Moon Pool of my house. Almost there. Just a few more minutes.
I was so caught up in running, I didn't notice the large branch that was on the forest floor. I tripped over it. Luckily, I managed to turn myself around right before I hit the ground so that I wouldn't land on any of Mia's cuts and bruises. However, that didn't stop her from feeling any pain for the impact of me hitting the ground. She screamed in pain as we fell. I could only guess how many of her cuts had reopened, all for nothing. Now the man would get her again, along with me. I felt my ankle, maybe we could still make a run for it. The minute I touched it, I winced in pain. It was definitely twisted. There was no way we would make it far. Especially if I had to carry Mia.
He walked out from behind a tree. "How unfortunate for you. So close to freedom, yet so far away."
"Don't you dare hurt her," I hissed.
"Oh, I won't hurt her. I'll kill her. But don't worry, you'll be with her when it happens this time. Feeling just as much pain, only you won't die. No, I'll make sure of that. Seraphina will be pleased once I tell her I've gotten you."
I felt my eyes turn purple, and Mia squeezed my hand.
"Katy," she murmured.
"What?"
"It's okay."
No. Those words sounded to much like what Lily said to me the night she died. I wouldn't like my other best friend die because of the same women's cause.
"I'll get you out of here." I promised, but I knew it would take a miracle if the both of us got out of this alive.
"Just— stay with me, okay?" She asked, as the man approached us. That's when I realized she wasn't scared of the man capturing her. She wasn't even afraid of dying. Mia was afraid of going through it alone. Mia didn't want her last moments on earth to be spent alone in pain.
"'Til the end," I croaked, tears running down my face. This can't be happening. What about James. I can't just leave, he'll think I abandoned him.
The man was now only a few feet away. I had to stall until I could come up with a plan.
"Wait!" I called out.
He paused, "Yes?"
"I feel I should at least know your name. I have a feeling you already now mine, so I won't bother saying it."
The man smiled, "Why, of course. It's Jones. Tyler Jones." Confident much?
"That's a nice name! Say how abo—"
"Young lady, if you don't mind, I have a killing I need to get done."
I hadn't come up with any plan. Mia would die, and it would be all my fault. As the man walked closer, I heard a howl in the distance.
Tyler stopped, confused. A coyote with glowing blue eyes jumped from what seemed to be behind us, and snarled at him. Three other animals appeared, and seemed to be guarding us. Except they weren't animals. They were werewolves. As one of them turned to look at me, I could feel hope rise in me.
Scott McCall's pack had arrived.
