Small table, padded chair
Bright lights, full cupWho do you see?
College student, panicked gaze
Suit and tie, hurried voice
You sit and it all goes byDrained and filled,
With energy, hope, comfort
A warm drink,
On a cold day
Or a warm nightDays uplifted,
Tears cried,
Smiles and laughter,
Hard breaks,You, small cup,
Overflowing with spices
See it allThey set you down
Under the lights
Bright against the dark
Music playing aboveThe only witness
To their many sides.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afterword: The inspiration for this was the very cup in the banner. I'd just had some pretty amazing coffee and got to thinking about what the everyday objects in our lives must witness.
