When we got to the hotel, we were told one of the rooms had three beds. I immediately called dibs on that one so I could share a room with Makenna and Alex. I positioned our bags in the same position as before and picked up Makenna very carefully. I tried my best not to wake her up. I walked silently into the hotel. After the team checked in, we crammed as many people as we could into the elevator. My team glanced at my uncomfortable position (for me at least. Makenna looked pretty comfortable) and smiled. I smiled even though she was starting to get heavy. It was a short, quiet ride to the seventh floor.
Once I found our room, I gently laid Makenna in the bed closest to the sliding glass doors. I knew she would want to see the veiw right when she woke up. I put her bag on the floor at the foot of the bed and sat in the chair across from the bed. I pulled out my phone and texted Alex.
"Hey we are in room 706. Didn't see you get off the plane. Are you ok?" I texted.
706 sounded really familiar. 706, 706, 706. Alex. Hospital. That was Alex's hospital number. Pain and bad memories flooded back. How ironic. I cringed at the thoughts. Two mintues leter, I got a response from my AWOL friend.
"Saved by the keeper!" my phone rang out. That was my cheesy ringtone. Shoot, that was really loud, I thought. Makenna didn't even stir. I sighed with relief.
The message read, "Sorry. Rooming with Lauren."
What? Lauren? That's weird. How does she know Lauren? Oh well, I thought to myself. I shrugged and let it go. I didn't respond. I slid the glass door open and walked onto the balcony. Sydney was beautiful. From our hotel, I could see the Opera House in the distance. I took a picture for my mom and sent it. I stared at the cars speeding below me. Where were they going? I decided to go out in the city. I checked my watch. It was just after 3. I had time. I grabbed my bag and jacket because it was cloudy and looked like it was going to rain. I left a note for Makenna on the table closest to her bed. I grabbed a room key and slipped quietly out the door. I didn't get very far because I ran into something. Or rather, somebody.
"Ow watch where... oh it's you," the person I ran into said.
I picked myself up off the ground and helped the person pick up their stuff. I looked up to see who I had ran into. It was Alex.
"Sorry," I apologized.
"You're still clumsy, aren't you? Hey are you leaving?" she asked, noticing my bag.
"Um... yeah. I'm going into the city. You can come if you want. Maybe we will have some time to catch up," I offered.
"Sure. I'll go get my stuff," she said with a smile.
