As it turned out, there were hundreds of camps in Sweden. Day camps, sleep-away camps, caravan meet ups. Valentina sighed as she started another internet search. She had brought her lap top to the lecture call, currently occupied by only her. Every key stroke sounded a hundred times louder than it really was.
“How is it going?” Eli mentally asked, setting down a cup in front of her. When they got back to Denvellia, and Valentina was set up in the class room, Eli had gone to shower, change into clean clothes. He stopped for coffee on the way back. Valentina was glad she abandoned her blind ruse as she admired Eli’s lean body, trying to see through the black button down shirt and fitted steel grey trousers.
“Not well, no progress.” She sighed.
“Enjoy your coffee. I’ll have a go at this.” Eli gave her a smile as he sat down beside her. The glint of her necklace caught his eye. He wanted to see what the charm looked like, but it had slipped inside her shirt, and Eli was worried his staring would get him in trouble.
“Thanks Eli. Oh, you aren’t wearing a tie today. That look suits you! Oh, is that…” Valentina playfully hooked a finger in his collar. “You’ve got quite the rug down there!” She smirked, eyeing up the trail of hair on his chest.
Eli blushed, closing his shirt, though not buttoning it. Women didn’t drool over him often, and it made Eli uneasy. He was a little confused. Despite sharing the night with Valentina, and wanting her attentions, when he received it his first instinct was to shy away.
“We need to take a different approach. We are thinking like Tracker, when we need to think more like news reporters. They would have used attention grabbing verbiage to increase readership.” Eli explained as he typed.
“Eli, did you bring M.S.’s journal with you? And his text book?” Valentina asked curiously. She sipped her coffee, and watched his fingers fly across the keyboard of her laptop.
“Of course, it’s in my bag. Why?” He raised an eyebrow as he spoke mentally, and glanced at his messenger bag on the chair beside her.
Valentina pulled his leather bag into her lap and pulled the books out. She immediately paged through the journal, looking for a passage. “Something struck me as I was reading last night. I didn’t get it at first, but while I was waiting for you, I started to piece it together. Yes! Yes! I found it! ‘The world is wondrous. I see the mysteries around me, and I think of God as a proud father, watching his child take their first steps. His grace surrounds. I see it in all things.’ Remember that?”
“Yes, it’s the first passage you read to me,” Eli answered.
“Okay, now this one is from Tracker’s diary. ‘The world is misery. I see suffering around me, and I think of God as a man that puts his seed in a woman and leaves the moment his orgasm has faded. If we are his children, he does not know, or at the least, he does not care. His apathy surrounds. I see it in all things.’ Do you hear that?” The dour tone of Tracker’s diary was buried under Valentina’s excitement.
“The wording… It’s very similar. Suspiciously so.” Eli turned from the computer to watch her explain the rest.
“There’s more. The text book, inside the cover reads St. Petersburg State University, and it is a philosophy text. And on this page Tracker writes, ‘It has been two years since I was taken from my school in St. Petersburg. I have dirt on my hands. I have scars on my back. Philosophy was useless but schools do not often offer major in captivity.’” Valentina’s eyes were wide.
“Tracker might be M.S.” Eli said. “All this time, we’ve been translating the same man? Tracker is M.S?”
“Also, this means if we think Tracker is still alive; then we think M.S. is still alive.” Valentina nearly shouted “We might find Tracker…M.S… We might find him!”
“But if Tracker, M.S. whomever is still alive, then why would he not have his journals? They aren’t published, I just… have them.” Eli shook his head. “I suppose we’ll just have to find him, and ask for ourselves.”
