It was finally lunch time. Everyone scurried towards the elevator. I guess I wasn' the only one.
Lindy grabs my arm from behind me and begins to walk faster.
" Hey, calm down. I'm pretty sure they'll have enough food for everyone."
" That's not why I'm walking faster. Don't you know? The residents are allowed to page us while we are eating, so we need to at least have a drink of water before they take us back." She pulls me towards her into a crowded elevator.
Oh. That's not fair. Why am I so behind all of these useful advices? Maybe I need to talk to more people.
I glance behind me and saw Garrett in the corner. I smile and wave at him. He smiles back and waves back. At least I have him and Lindy.
Lindy nudges me with her arm and whispers," So.. uh what's going on between you two?
I turn around to face her.
" Nothing. Why?"
" Just wondering." She looks away from me and begins to whistle.
The elevator finally reaches the first floor.
We didn't even have to try to walk out since people were dragging us out.
It's a good thing that I bumped into Lindy or I would've sit alone at the lunch table. Or not if Garrett would still introduce himself to me.
" Hey, is it ok if Garrett sits with us? He might sit alone and I don't want to see that." We pick up our trays and select some side dishes.
She nods and quickly turn to me.
" Oh...." She grins, evily.
Rolling my eyes, I grab an orange and a turkey sandwich. I pull out my bills from my pocket and pay the lunch lady.
Lindy grabs a seat beside a trashcan. As I walk towards the table, my eyes search for Garrett. When they did, I gesture him to sit with us and he walks towards us.
When I take a seat, Lindy watches me as I make every move.
" What?"
She shrugs and eats her peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
" So how was y'alls first day?"Garrett asks.
" Good." Lindy and I respond at the same time.
Then, the feeling came back again. My eyes suddenly search for him. Him, as in Dr. Howard. What's wrong with me? Is this a disease or an illness?
My breath takes out as a group of residents comes in.
" Who are you looking for?" Lindy takes my orange. She looks at me and I nod for accepting her permission.
" Nobody," his eyes meet mine and I turn to my sandwich.
Garrett puts his arm around me and tries to look at my face. My eyes widen.
" Are you ok?" He worriedly asks.
I nod and turn again. He's gone.
I throw my trash away and my pager beeps. I take a deep breath and rush to the elevator.
" Hey! See you later?" Garrett must have been surprised by my actions.
I wave at him as I step into the elevator. I tap my fingers against my pants and patiently wait until I reach the third floor.
