George Harrison. I'd been in love with him since I was five. But I could never tell, did he feel the same way?
Let me introduce myself. My name is Rose and I'm 18. I live in Wavertree, Liverpool with my mum, dad and little brother Peter. We're a very musical family; my mum sings and plays the piano, my dad plays the guitar and my brother plays the piano and mouthy. I learned to do all of the above, mostly to impress George.
Me and George used to be close when we were young. But after a while we stopped talking as much as we did. He started at the Liverpool Institute and was so involved with this band 'The Quarrymen' that we barely spoke. But I knew I loved him. There was something mysterious about him. Tall, dark and handsome? Is that what they say? Because that described George perfectly.
We met when I was five and he was six. My family had just moved onto Arnold Grove, the same street as George. We used to do all sorts, he'd always come to my house for tea and every other week our families would sit and play monopoly together. It was great.
He had moved house quite recently, another reason as to why we didn't talk as much. I didn't mind, I knew fate would bring us close again. Then, as I said, he joined The Quarrymen. I'd seen them live a few times. I quite liked John Lennon, he'd always make me laugh. Paul McCartney seemed so sweet. I'd always stand at the back though, I was nervous because of George.
Until this one gig. Me and my best friend Anne went to see the Quarrymen, or 'The Beatles' as they were now known. They had gotten so popular. We went to the Cavern Club and I'd never seen anything like it. It was so full, there was practically no air and I felt like I was melting, especially with George being there...
So anyway, the gig started. John was of course making jokes, Paul was being his usual sweet self and their new drummer Ringo sat at the back quietly. Oh and George. He stood to the far left of the stage, almost hidden. He looked so dark as the lights were mostly focused on John and Paul; the leaders as it seemed. John and Paul sang most of the songs, Ringo sang one but I had noticed George hadn't sang yet. The end of the gig was nearing and John introduced none other than George to close the show! Before George began to sing, he said 'This song goes out to a beautiful girl..' and that was it. He began to sing one of their original songs called 'Do You Want To Know A Secret'. His eyes wandered as he sang until eventually he noticed me. He smiled as the words 'I'm in love with you' left his lips. I wished he really meant it. The song finished.
Me and Anne began to leave, struggling to fight through the crowd of over emotional teenage girls. I felt a tap on my shoulder. 'I mean it you know'. I heard a deep voice with a scouse accent call from behind. It was George!
I smiled. 'You mean what?' I asked.
'I'm in love with you, Rose' he shouted. 'I always have been!'
I couldn't believe it. 'I'm in love with you, George!' I shouted.
I turned to find Anne. She had gone back to the stage and was chatting with John. I knew she liked him! Me, Anne and all four Beatles went backstage. It was great. Ringo's girlfriend, Maureen and Paul's girlfriend Dot were all there. It was such a perfect scene. Me and George cuddled and talked. It was just amazing. And I love him.
