I tap my microphone as I stand on the stage of our venue, looking out at the hundreds of empty seats that will soon be filled with screaming fans. Right now we’re rehearsing, and Luke and Calum won’t stop messing around. Sometimes it feels like I’m the only one who takes this band seriously. We finish our last song after what feels like an eternity, and I head back to the dressing room with Luke, Calum, and Ashton. We enter the room to find a table filled with snacks and candy, and we all immediately dig in.
“Where’s the pizza?!” I shout, annoyed that the snack team couldn’t fulfill my one request.
“Calm down Michael, its right over here. You seem a little off tonight, is everything alright?” Luke says.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Just a little hungry I guess.” I grumble. Luke shrugs, and goes back to stuffing jelly beans in his mouth. I sit down on the couch and scroll through my Instagram feed. Calum plops down on the couch next to me.
“I can’t stop thinking about those girls we saw in the car earlier.” He says.
“Yeah, they were playing Green Day so they must have been cool.” Luke agrees.
“I heard the play Blink 182 after that.” Ashton chimes in. I have to agree with them, they seemed pretty cool.
“I wonder if they’re single…” Calum says with a sly grin. We all laugh, and launch into another conversation about which Green Day album is the best. Soon we hear a voice come over the intercom.
“Talent please report to backstage in five minutes.” The crackling voice that’s amplified through the room says.
“That must mean us.” Calum says, completely stating the obvious. We head out of the room, walking in the direction we think is backstage. To our luck, we guessed right, and soon we’ve arrived and some random agent is talking to us about what not to do on stage. We plug in our earpieces and tune our instruments. For some reason, I just haven’t been feeling like myself today. I guess it started this morning. I don’t know; I just have this strange feeling that I’m missing something. After we have everything set up, the boys and I run out to stage, Ashton doing a quick drum beat and then us jumping straight into Heartbreak Girl. After an hour or two and playing a bunch of our songs and covers, we say thank you and run off stage.
“That was a great show!” Ashton says, slightly out of breath. I nod, smiling. I feel much better now that I’ve played some music; I just channeled what I was feeling into my playing. We wait until the fans have cleared out of the arena, and then we can finally pile into our car and drive home. We sit in silence for most of the ride, until we see three figures in the distance.
“They look kind of lost. Do you think we should give them a ride?” Luke says.
“I don’t know they may thing we’re creepy.” Calum responds.
“Guys, it’s worth a try. What if they’re seriously lost?” I pipe in. Calum and Luke nod in agreement, and we all decide to at least stop and ask them. We slowly come to a stop behind them, and they all turn around, squinting into the headlights. I can see their mouths moving but I don’t understand what they’re saying. Ashton rolls down the window.
“Need a ride?” He says, and the tallest girl’s mouth almost hits the sidewalk below her. I make eye contact with her, and it feels like something clicks into place. After a second or two she closes her mouth and turns to the girls next to her. They seem to communicate just with looks, and after about a minute she turns to Ashton.
“That would be lovely. Thank you so much.” She says in an accent I can’t quite define. She’s definitely not American, but I don’t know about the other two girls. I look around and realize there’s a slight problem. It’s a rather small car, I’m sitting in the passenger front seat and Luke and Calum are sitting in the only two seats in the back. I mentally groan. Why didn’t we think to buy a bigger car?
“Guys? There aren’t any open seats.” I say.
“That’s okay. They can sit on our laps.” Luke responds almost immediately, not taking his eyes of the girl with the honey colored hair and blue dress. She blushes almost immediately, dropping her eyes to her feet. Calum volunteers for the girl with long black hair to sit on his lap, and I make a sudden decision.
“You can sit with me.” I say, pointing at the tall girl in the black dress. I’m surprised as soon as the words leave my mouth; I’m always shy around strangers. She blushes, and her brunette hair falls in front of her face. Soon everyone is seated, the girl with honey hair on Luke’s lap, the girl with black hair on Calum’s, and the brunette on mine. I hear a murmured conversation between Luke and the girl sitting on his lap, and I find out her name is Jemma. I hear Calum and his girl giggling behind me, so I decide to start a conversation with the girl seated on my lap.
“So, what’s your name?” I ask shyly.
“Well my full name is Cassandra, but everyone calls me Cas.” She says, and I realize she’s definitely British.
“Well, I’m Michael.” I say. She giggles.
“I. I sort of already know that. My friends and I are kind of fans.” I smile. I’m glad the girl I like is a fan of my music. Wait, what? Did I just say I liked her? I shake it off, pushing my thoughts to the side.
“So, how old are you?” I ask.
“Rose, Jemma and I are all 18.” She responds, and I mentally sigh. Thankfully she isn’t like, five years younger than me.” A question suddenly pops into my mind.
“Hey, you look familiar, have we met before?” She thinks for a second, and then responds.
“Oh! I think we drove by you guys earlier this morning.”
“Oh right! You’re the Green Day girls!” I exclaim. She opens her mouth to respond, but is cut off.
“I hate to interrupt these fascinating conversations, but I don’t exactly know where you girls live.” Ashton says. The girl who I figure must be Rose gives him an address just a few houses down from ours, and I mentally memorize it, planning on coming to visit someday soon. We continue our conversation, but too soon we stop in front of a nice house. Cas looks out the window and sighs.
“Oh wait, let me get your number!” She says, and I’m glad she asked. I quickly make a contact in her phone, making my name ‘Mikey :)’. She gives me a quick hug and walks up her driveway with her friends. Ashton slowly backs out of the driveway, and Luke breaks the silence.
“Did anyone else get a number?” Luke says, and I can hear the grin in his voice.
“I did” Calum and I say in unison, and we all laugh.
“I guess I’m just forever alone.” Ashton says, faking sadness, and I laugh. This day has turned out to be great.
