I awake with a start when I hear someone say my name loudly, their hand gently squeezing my arm. My breathing is heavy as I look up at my boyfriend, who is looking down at me with a worried look in his eye.
"Is everything okay?" He asks me quietly.
"Yeah, I'm okay." I sigh, sitting up slowly and leaning against the wall behind our bed.
He sits up next to me and kisses my cheek "Did you have another nightmare?"
I nod and he pulls me close to him, holding me tightly. I rest my head against his chest as he holds me, gently rocking me back and forth.
"Do you want to talk about it, sweetie?" He asks softly, running his fingers through my hair. I shake my head quietly. "Whatever it was, it was just a nightmare."
We sit like this, my head on his chest, for about half an hour while I calm down. Eventually my breathing slows to its normal pace and I don't feel as scared anymore.
"Do you think you can go back to sleep?" He asks quietly, loosening his grip on my slightly.
I look up at him, staying close. "I don't know if I'll be able to, but I can try." I smile slightly, making him smile softly too.
He lays back down, taking me with him, keeping my head on his chest.
Quietly, he sings to me, whispering in my ear. I close my eyes, listening to his soothing voice and the rhythmic beat of his heart.
I slowly fall asleep while he sings A Love Like War to me softly.
Once I'm asleep, he stops singing, smiling as he looks down at me. He gently kisses my cheek before closing his eyes and falling asleep next to me, still holding me close in his arms.
