Fanfictions are everybodys way of saying 'hey, I loved your work so much and what is THIS' and to be honest, I love it. Also I feel that, as an author, having someone make fanfiction on your work is just so amazing and a huge compliment because people fell in love with your characters so hard that they imagine them everywhere.
Now, fanfictions are the same as your regular story though you may be using the same world/characters as the original author, but if you do it write, it'll be just as good if not better.
NOTE: dont let anyone discredit your writing because 'oh its just fanfiction, you didnt do any of the hard work' because yes, honey, you did! Fanfiction needs just as much effort as a fresh story, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.
So, how do you write a fanfiction??? There are no rules. A fanfiction if your own individual story and you can tell it how you like. One thing you might wanna consider is heading over to a crazy place like tumblr and swandiving into your fandom to check out headcannons, concept art and obscure character facts. You will find literally everything on tumblr, dont worry. Of course, if you have your own fresh ideas thats great and you should 100% embrace it and go for it.
If you're writing a fanfiction of a book on wattpad, it would be a good idea to ask the author if its okay for you to do so. Some authors might still be jn the process of world building and a fanfiction can distract them from that. And some people might just want their stories to remain unique.
A key thing about fanfiction is that, while you may use the same world and characters, you can't copy the plot line of the original story. Thats when you begin to tredge in to palgirism. Even though you're not copying it word for word, you are stealing this persons story and trying to make it your own.
Other than that, fanfiction is like every other genre. The story still needs the same amount of dedication as any other category to become successful. But dont worry, fanfiction is pretty muh the most popular category on wattpad!!
