So, I have never written a historical-fiction story, but I have written a book set in a medieval setting. Writing something set hundereds of years ago requires research!
I think I touched on this in the 'Background' chapter of this story, but lets talk about it again.
Language
Think about the kind of language your characters are going to use in a historic time period, even if its just the 50's. Research local slang or a newspaper article from around the time your story is set and look at how people spoke.Wardrobe
Every era has its own style. To really create the feeling of the time you're writing in, you need accurate wardrobe. This one is easier in that a quick Google image search will show you all you need to know. Remember to include the class of your character to, a victorian Lady and a victorian peasant wear 2 very different outfits.Housing
Think about how buildings looked back then and also, how they worked. Was this story set before or after we had a working sewage system???Work
Think about what kind of jobs were available at the time as your protagonist is bound to meet a variety of people. Think about what work was common at the time, and what kind of jobs existed then that don't exist now.Society and Politics
There have been many changes in laws and rights over the years so think about some of those. Does your protagonist have the right to vote? Are they allowed to be seen in a homosexual relationship in public without repercussion?? Is the death penalty still a thing in that country? These are all important world building ideas that you should consider when planning you story!! There's probably more areas too, but I'd say these are the main ones to consider. You may come across more things you have to research when actually writing, but please make sure you do!! Authentic worldbuilding equals A* story writing!!
