Hierarchies are fun, almost every society has one, from a friendship group to a 15th century middle Eastern Government. Hierarchies are great.
You must determine the hierarchy in your story, wether you need a large scale one for a whole community, or a small ome for the group that your story revolves around. Some examples:
The Mean Girls
1.The one is charge is the meanest
2.The next 2 or 3 are her loyal minions
3.Your protagonist is usually the 'new girl'who fits in here
4. Anyone else less than a minion and more of an admirerWerewolves
1. The Alpha and Luna of the pack
2. The Betas who help the Alpha and Luna
3. Gammas and Omegas who make up the large portion of the pack communityThe Monarchy
1. King and Queen
2. Prince and Princess
3. Duke and Duchess
4. Marquees and Marchioness
5. Earl and Countess
6. Baron and BaronessThe Mayan Hierarchy

2. The Middle Class

D. Artisans
3. The Lower Class

B. SlavesThe Executive Branch of the US Government
1. The President
2. The Vice President
3. The CabinetSo, as you can see, hierarchies exist is all kinds of communities from small scales to large ones since the dawn of time. Their is always someone in charge and theres always someone whos taken advantage of.
Determining your hierarchy can help you plan your story in many different ways. By seeing how order is maintained, you can quickly assign characteristics to your main characters within minutes. Is your protagonist the level headed leader? Or are they a hot headed dictator with a mellow vice president type friend who talks them down from rash ideas??
It also helps with larger scale world building. Depending on where your story is set and what its about, your protagonist may be butting heads with some high ranking government officials.... or the local Mafia. Creating a heirarchy will explain it all. It also helps to see in which side the public favour tips to. Is the general public gonna take the side of the sweet faced Queen, or you, the lowly bandit who knows her true colours??
This is a penny for your thoughts, mull over it and pick your power my lovelies...
