Caleb was speeding through the streets of Atlanta trying to get Michael to Piedmont Hospital. The call that Michael had received from his little sister was so vague that he wasn't sure what to think of what he was about to go into. But as Caleb swerved into the emergency entrance Michael could only hope and pray that whatever Janet had called him for was simple and not life threatening.
Even though it was a no park zone Caleb still put the car in park and hopped out to follow behind his best friend as they ran through the sliding doors and into the waiting room. Michael looked around trying to see if he could find one of his siblings or at least to see if Janet was out waiting for him for him but no one was.
Rushing up to the desk he reached over the counter and pressed the button on the phone hanging up whatever call the nurse on the other side was having. She looked at him in bewilderment stunned that he'd just did that.
"Excuse you sir," she said smacking his hand away from the phone. "Please take a seat and I'll be right with you."
"LaToya Jackson, what room is she in?" Michael asked ignoring the lady's request. "Now." He'd added on when she didn't say anything. Caleb noticed the shift in the atmosphere and pulled Michael back from the counter and stepped in front of him.
"'Scuse me miss but this is a matter of life and death so we really need to know what room LaToya Jackson is in. We're her brothers and our little sister Janet called us to rush right over," Caleb showed a charming smile ignoring the doomed feeling in the pit of his stomach. "Please."
The nurse looked from Caleb and then to Michael who had taken a step over. She looked him up and down and Michael's jaw clenched and his left eyebrow rose. The nurse sighed and hung up the phone she was still holding before sitting down and typing away on her computer.
She finally told them the room number and then pressed the button for the double doors to open. Michael and Caleb were quick on their feet running through the hallways and ignoring the nurses who yelled at them to slow down. Finally they made it to the room, but stopped abruptly before going inside because of the two cops that stood at LaToya's bedside.
He took in his sisters abused state and clenched his fist tighter and tighter with each second. It wasn't until Katherine stood up and said something that the cops nodded and then turned to leave. They passed by Michael and Caleb with not-so-happy faces, but with looks of sympathy. Caleb stood to the side and Michael walked into the room, Katherine dabbing the tears from LaToya's face softly as to not hurt her.
"Mike!" Janet cried, looking away from LaToya and to him. She got up from her chair against the wall and came over to hug him tightly, pressing her face into the front of his body.
Katherine snapped her body in his direction noticing his face and his body language. She sighed and slowly walked around the bed. Once she made it to him she started rubbing his back.
"Michael," LaToya's voice croaked, "it's... it's going to be okay."
He broke free of his mother and sister and walked to LaToya's bed side, taking in her black and blue half-swollen face. He was surprised that she could still speak because of the deep finger marks on her neck from where she'd been choked. He swallowed hard to trying to swallow the anger that threatened to rise.
"Who did this, Toya?" He'd asked his voice tight and fists clenched.
LaToya sighed and winced as she turned her head toward the window where a little bit of daylight seeped through. The sun was preparing to set.
"Michael knowing who did this will not change the fact that it was done," Katherine spoke behind him. Her arms were wrapped around Janet. "And whatever you're thinking about doing don't do it. It won't change anything or make anything better."
