A Winter Wonderland

Walking in the woods.
Sky so blue and Earth so white,
Winter Wonderland.

Stars

I look at the night sky
And imagine
What it once looked like.
How I wonder
What it would be like
To see in person
A black velvet sky of the purest silk,
So black it's almost blue,
Shimmering with constellations
And the glorious Milky Way,
Nebulous with countless stars,
Not today's faded dark purple sky of old cotton,
Polluted with centuries of gaseous toxins and city lights,
Speckled with the occasional star here or there,
Not a full constellation in sight,
And the Milky Way completely invisible.

Joy

I look at the seagulls that always come to the school campus to eat leftovers and crumbs from students' lunches and watch as they fight over a half-eaten sandwich, and I smile and I laugh to myself as I think back to the days when I used to fight with my sister over the last chocolate chip cookie, and I wonder why people can't see that non-human animals act just like human children and that humans are animals that try every day to fight their animal instincts in exchange for what they call "civilized" behavior, even though civilization was, is, and will continue to be the destruction of the Earth and humanity with it, and if humans destroy all complex life on Earth, all that will be left are the simplest organisms that the humans once mocked, and I wonder why we have to continue destroying our greatest gift, our one and only home, instead of finding joy in the littlest of things like watching seagulls fight over a half-eaten sandwich and remembering our childhood or watching a little kid laugh with delight as they blow bubbles that glimmer with all the colors of the rainbow in the fading golden light of the afternoon sun.

Happiness

Happiness is health and short memory so if you want to be happy, become a Lennie Small.

Happiness is relief from suffering so if you want to be happy, suffer more so the happy moments become fewer in number but more meaningful.

Happiness is finding joy in the little things in life, so if you want to be happy, look up from your device and take a look at the beauty of nature around you and rejoice in what the Earth has given us instead of rejecting it and destroying the very thing that gives us life.

Sunset

Early in the morning,
when the sky is all gray,
mist hanging low in the air,
cool and damp, I stay

still, my breath fogging in front of me,
looking up to see the first rays
of golden Sunshine,
Daybreak so gay,

yet I remain cold as ever,
for though it may be May,
freezing April showers brought no
blooming flowers or singing jays,

so I return to watch the fading light
of a golden sunset, copper that plays
across a sparkling lake and between
the strands of my hair while I pray

that tomorrow will be warmer, when
Oh! What is this? I say,
standing in wonder and shock and awe,
marveling at the sight at the end of the day:

In the twilight I stand
Surrounded by mystery and wonder
Let there be dark
And there was dark.
