Collaboration

About an hour after our groups for the pre-internships are announced, they send us to the Millenium Gardens. There, we're told to assemble into our respective groups, and we do, some of us (me) with heavy hearts.

I've worked hard to be accepted for this internship, and if it demands group work, I'll do it. I was born to impress.

I walk around and find Daniel first, and then wait for him to find the barista girl. Without looking once at either of them, I take one of the folders that detail our group assignment, and lead the others over to a bench under the shade.

I turn around, and they're both looking right at me.

Daniel is the first to break the silence. With a smile on his face, he announces his name. After this, there's silence. The barista girl is staring at me still, and I'm avoiding eye contact, looking over at Daniel.

"Um, what are your names?" Daniel asks.

She announces her name as soon as I do.

"Isabelle."

"Charlotte"

I stare at her intently. Who does she think she is? It's like she wants to be difficult.

"I think we should start reading our assignment" says Daniel.

I nod and open up the folder in my hand, revealing a thick document. The first page summarizes the task. I read it aloud:

Interns of the Millennium Pre-College Buisness Intern Program,

For the next month, you will be attending both lectures and seminars in business and management Monday-Friday from 9:00AM -- 5:00PM. After this and Dinner at 6:00, you will be given two hours of time to work on your group projects, which will be on pitching a product, under the guidance of an experienced professor. This will continue for the remainder of this week, after which you will be given thorough feedback and will then be assigned new groups and will be expected to work on another similar project. The products pitched in the second project will be for a chosen company and professor, and therefore an internship. Those who present the most promising products will receive certificates and have their products launched.

Those of you who wish to gain bonus points should look to use the resources provided in the Libraries of Millennium. These are closed to non-alumni from Mondays to Thursdays and so we recommend the Public Library.

For this week, each group is designing the following product:

Group 1: A Parachute

Group 2: A Watch

Group 3: A Popcorn Machine

Group 4: An Alarm Clock

Group 5: A Coat

Group 6: A Chain of Cakes

Group 7: A Makeup Set

Details for each of the products are provided in the information packets of each groups folder.

All product documents should be printed and presented in this folder.

In your folder you must have:

Background  Product Research (5000 words), Relevant Market Research Surveys, A Product Prototype, A Label, A Company Logo, A Costings and Profits Spreadsheet, A Company Name, A Written Product Pitch (You will later preform an Oral Pitch to the Activity Coordinators and the other groups.

I check the front cover of our folder. Sketched on it, I find the number 2.  "We're Group 2. A Watch." I say.

"Great, that's the easiest." Grins Daniel.

"I'm thinking by today we should have finished all the background research and the surveys." I say.

"I can go to the Public Library. I've been there before, so it'll be convenient."

"Right, and I'll work on the surveys. I'll share it with you guys so you can add in any questions you feel are missing." Daniel says. "I think you should go to the library together. It'll be more effective. We need all 5000 words done and polished into an essay format. Just a suggestion."

No matter how rude this girl was, this project had to work somehow, and I didn't want to annoy Daniel, as he was being so polite. "I'm fine with that if you're willing to cooperate." I say.

At the time, I thought I was simply agreeing to writing one essay with Charlotte. I didn't know I was signing up for so much more...
