"What just happened?" Daniel exclaimed the second after the purple mist knocked Gigi out.
"Your girlfriend was able to give me a spell to cast myself. When she wakes up, she won't remember a thing about today." He tried to prop up his sister on the floor. She didn't seem to have been hurt. Diego had no idea she was going to fall over. "Can you help me bring her to a booth? My mom went out grocery shopping so she won't walk in or anything."
Daniel still looked really shocked, but he knelt down to help his best friend. He took Gigi's feet and Diego carried her upper body and the two of them started to bring her to the large booth in the corner of the restaurant made for big families. They gently laid her down on the booth chair. It was so big it was like a bed.
"So what happens when she wakes up?" Daniel asked, still a little unsure about the mission. He normally tried to keep away from magic as much as possible, Diego knew that.
"The idea is that she won't remember anything that happened since after school." Diego explained, "Which means she won't remember that I have magic powers."
Daniel rolled his eyes, "Foolproof."
Diego laughed, "Why the sarcasm, buddy?"
"Because she found out this time, what's keeping her from finding out next time?" Daniel was eyeing the sleeping Rueda like she was going to wake up and attack.
"I'll be ready next time." Diego said, trying to convince himself, "If that doesn't work, then I'll just put another spell on her. Simple."
Daniel raised an eyebrow, but nodded with his friend. "Alright then."
The two friends turned suddenly to Gigi who was starting to move around.
"Dangit- I didn't expect it to be that fast." Diego panicked.
"What do we say happened to her when she wakes up?" Daniel hissed with wide eyes.
"Oh man, I forgot about that." Diego could almost slap himself for being so ill prepared, "We could say she fainted when she saw One Direction walk into the store."
"Dude, why would One Direction be here in Miami?" Daniel started pacing around, something he always did when he was trying to think, "Plus if what Mel says is true, they live in England."
"Right. Maybe she got too hot and passed out?"
"Diego, we grew up in Florida. The heat never bothers us."
"Well do you think you could stop shutting down all of my ideas and actually think of something already!?" Diego snapped. His sister was starting to get a little restless now, and he knew she could wake up at any minute. He didn't want her to know about magic. He wanted her to forget any of that stuff ever happened. But if he came up with a stupid excuse would it make her wonder too hard about what happened? And then maybe she'd think so hard that the spell would wear off and she'd remember everything?
Daniel cast his friend a knowing glance, "Calm down. That's your freak-out face. We'll think of something."
"Think of what?" Came Gigi's voice from the table, "What's going on?"
Now Daniel had a bit of a freak-out face on as well. The boys looked at each other and they didn't know what to do.
"Why am I sleeping on a booth?" Gigi demanded, "Actually why am I sleeping anyway?"
Diego figured that asking a slew of annoying questions was a good sign that things were back to normal, but now he couldn't consult with Daniel on what to say. He felt his palms heating up already.
He quickly exclaimed: "You got too hot!"
Sadly, at the same time that Daniel stammered: "You saw One Direction!"
The two boys looked at each other and tried to recover.
Daniel said: "I mean you got too hot."
But, instantaneously Diego said, "I meant that you saw One Direction."
"What?" Gigi asked, confused.
"Actually, we honestly don't know what happened to you." Diego said.
Daniel nodded and played along, "Yeah we just walked in and you were passed out on that booth."
"I was?" Gigi questioned, casting a long glance toward the corner table where she had been sleeping.
"Yeah." Diego confirmed, "You should probably get some rest now. We should head home." He started to practically push his sister out the door. Daniel swiftly walked behind the twins.
"Oh and thanks for covering for me today, Daniel." the kanay said to his friend as he locked the front door with the employee key. Looking through the front door when the 7 was closed was always spooky for Diego. Every time he saw it empty, dark, and quiet, he would think of how so easily it could look like that all the time. If the bills don't turn around in his mom's favor quickly, the 7 might look like that permanently.
"No problem," Daniel nodded, then he shouldered his backpack, "See you tomorrow in school." And with that Daniel Miller jogged down the street to his house.
As Diego turned back he saw his sister looking at her hands.
"What's the matter?" He asked.
"Just wondering what could have happened." Gigi sighed, "You know me- I like answers. Not knowing is seriously annoying. Maybe someone in the store saw what happened..."
Diego bit his lip, "No I don't think so, the store was already closed when we found you." They both started walking at the same time down the street to their house. It was a twin thing. While they didn't have telepathy, they did think quite alike. They mostly wanted to watch the same types of movies. Diego was happy that his sister was more comedy than romantic drama. They normally ordered the same types of food. Every time they went out for ice cream they played a game where they would order from different people, not knowing what the other twin was getting, but when the ice cream came out it would normally be the same flavor.
That's why it really stunk so much that Gigi didn't have magical powers too.
All of Diego's friends really only saw the twins fight. Probably most of the people in their school thought that the two of them hated each other, but they didn't. And it hurt Diego more than anything that he couldn't share his special secret with his sister.
"Huh." Gigi said, "After the store closed? Maybe I literally worked so hard I dropped." she joked.
Somehow this made Diego laugh really, really hard. Maybe it was that Gigi was back joking again
But he knew it was because now he didn't have to worry about her thinking he was a freak and then sharing it with the whole school. The pressure was finally off. But he had to keep it that way.
And in that moment in the night, under the street lamps on the sidewalk with his sister, he promised himself that he would train. He'd work so hard at his powers that keeping them under control would be simple.
Things could go back to the way they were before.
