"Are we there yet?" We all say in unison to Kai. He throws his head back still keeping his eyes on the empty road ahead. "Yes, we are almost done with this tank of gas and Zara says that since we are out of Florida and in Mississippi then we should be fine for a few days before we have to move farther to get away from the infection." I roll my eyes thinking of him and Zara speaking and say without looking away from the mirror, "Well I'm so happy Zara could give you that information." Kai reaches over and squeezes my hand in a sign of comfort. We hear a shrieking scream from the back, Jordan is having another nightmare. Kai quickly pulls over and runs to the back and cradles her in his arms. He strokes her face in an effort to wake her. Jordan looks up at Kai with no emotion and whispers, "Nolan is going to die." Elsie yells, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE'S GOING TO DIE?!" We are all shocked by her sudden spark of spunk. Even Allison couldn't be mad at her. Jordan tells us, "In my nightmare, all I saw is Nolan dropping to the ground and Elsie crying over him." In my head I'm freaking out, but I can't let them see me scared, I'm the oldest one here and I need to show that I'm strong. I take a breath and speak up to say, "Well if we want Nolan and ourselves to survive, we need to find shelter for the next few days." They all look up and Nolan takes my hand to reassure me that it's going to be okay. He can see my fear, of course he can...he's my brother.
After the tank hitting empty, we end up somewhere in south Mississippi. We park in a secluded camper park with a few campers parked here and there. Kai announces, "I chose this spot because we can find the biggest camper and hook it into the car so we can move it to wherever we go next." I can see Allison's annoyance in the fact we have to drag a huge camper on her "beautiful" car, but I ignore her because Kai's right. Zara announces, "Put your masks on, we don't know how strong it is, I'll go out first since I'm immune." She exits the car and walks around for a few moments. Nolan and Kai asks, "Lila...what are you going to do with her?" Elsie and Jordan laugh from the back and I simply say, "I'll show her not to mess with me like I did at the gas station if she wants to try something else." With a smug smile on my face.
Zara comes back to the car and says, " Okay so it is not strong, but it's still noticeable, so y'all need to keep your masks on for now." I roll my eyes and turn to put my mask on, Allison snickers from her seat at my reaction and I hide my smile under my mask. Everyone exits and we are on a hunt to find a camper that can fit all of us comfortably. After about the 3rd camper, we find one that is pretty big, it has a bedroom with a king bed and a sliding double bed underneath it. On the opposite end of it, two sets of bunk beds and a bathroom...fun, one bathroom for seven people.
We all pile in the food and water into the refrigerator after we find the power button and rig it up so it could work. We take our masks off and according to the clock on the small oven, it's 11:23pm, we all need sleep so we can make a plan tomorrow. Everyone is sitting around the living room, on the floor and couches and I speak up with a yawn, "So we need to sleep and we can wake up tomorrow and create a plan for the next few days." Zara scoffs from the corner and Allison stands up and says, "You have a problem with Lila, you have a problem with all of us, so drop your attitude or get out." We are all relieved that Allison finally said what was on all our minds. Zara stands up to face her and snarls harshly, "Then I guess we all have a problem." She turns to sit back down and I see her look Kai up a down with a smirk evident to all of us. Nolan gives her a glare that says 'Back off. ' to relieve some tension Elsie says, "I think we all need some sleep, we have been awake for to long, so where are we all sleeping?" Since no one else spoke up I was about to say something when Zara looks over to Kai and laughs while reaching to grab his hand, I slap her hand away like she was a threat to me or something. I roll my eyes continuing what I was about to say, "Well me and Kai will take the big bed, Allison and Jordan can sleep on the roll out bed, Nolan and Elsie will sleep in the bunk beds and Zara will sleep in there on the other one I guess."
All rushing to where I 'assigned' them we took the toothbrushes and toothpaste from the counter that we got from the gas station and raced to the bathroom to get there first. After 30 minutes of pushing elbows to simply brush our teeth. It's already midnight and we have a long day ahead of us, going to bed sounds like a dream.
Sinking into the bed next to my love, I drift to sleep.
