Kai's POV
I sit in this car next to Zara with regret sending a cold shiver down my body. Why did I agree to do this? I should have fought for us. I should have fought for Lila. I can see the love of my life sleeping in the front seat, she is so beautiful, but I can't tell her, especially in front of Zara. She would not only kill Lila, she would kill me. Everyone hates me right now, even my sister, when she told me that I'm acting like a guy that likes to play with girl's emotions, that hit me right in the chest. She was right, even if it wasn't intentional, it's all Zara's fault, why couldn't I have found another house that day?
The screeching sound of the car haulting, we come upon a person stopping us, a man with 2 kids, they all have makeshift masks on. He goes towards Allison's window and she turns to face us, "What do I do? What if he attacks me or something?" Nolan replies with a very angry voice, "Allison don't open the window, he seriously might kill you, if he has kids that means he is desperate. Be careful." She nods her head and cracks the window, "May I help you?" in her infamous cold tone. The man replies, "My wife died from the infection, and we ran out of gas, could we hitch a ride with you all, I know how to fight. Allison tells him to hold on, he nods in agreement, she rolls up her window and turns to us again. "We don't have any room in the car or the camper, especially for kids, do I tell him no?" We all tell in unison, "TELL HIM NO!" She jumps back and rolls her eyes looking back at him, she cracks the window and says, "I'm sorry, but we don't have enough room for 3 more people in our car or camper, sorry. Good luck." He looks shocked and covers it with rage, he starts banging on her window yelling profanities at her. She slams on the gas pedal and we jolt back in our seats. She's pissed. One thing I have learned since being with Lila, don't mess with Allison.
After the incident, we continue driving when Allison said she needs a break, we have about 2 hours left when I tell her I would drive. She rolls her eyes and asks, "Does anybody else want to drive?" Half of the people look at her with a pleading expression and the other half are sleeping so she puts her mask on and gets out waiting for me to do the same. As we switch places I realize that I'm sitting next to Lila, she's so gorgeous when she sleeps. I shake the thought away when Zara and Allison start arguing again, "You better stay on your side of the seat or so help me God!" Of course that's Allison, but I can't blame her, who would want to sit next to Zara? They finally scoot as far away from each other, squishing Jordan and I start to drive when they settle.
Lila wakes up tiredly, without opening her eyes, she asks "Are we there yet?" I chuckle and grab her hand not realizing that Zara was in the back watching my every move. Lila opens her eyes and swats my hand away, she looks shocked when she realizes I'm the one driving. Zara shouts from the back, "Kai, pull the car over. Now." I know if I don't do as I'm told, I'll regret it, so I pull over by a sign that says, 'Lake Charles: 20 miles' sighing in relief that we are almost there, I pull my mask on and exit the car and go to the back end of the camper, she jumps out and walks quickly towards me. She is 3 inches away from my face when she yells, "Do you not realize the terms of our deal?!" I put my hand over my face wiping her spit from my cheek and reply calmly, "I remember Zara, I just forgot for a split second, Lila has been my girlfriend for over 3 years, when she does something funny, my reaction is to hold her hand or kiss her cheek. I just have to get used to no touching her." She looks like she's ready to kill me when she grits out in response, "Repeat the deal. I want you to tell me what we agreed on so I know you understand it." I take a deep breath and say quietly, "If I so much as touch, look, talk, help, or think about Lila Davis, you will kill her while everyone is asleep. Then you will have me all to yourself." She smiles knowing she just stabbed me in the heart making me repeat that. I feel a lump in my throat, but I won't give her the satisfaction of seeing me cry. Silently, she walks back to the car and I follow her. Getting in the drivers seat, I look at Lila and see that she has been crying when she quickly tries to wipe them away. I know when she's upset, and it hurts to know that I'm responsible.
We finally arrive after an awkward and silent car ride and I look around realizing that Louisiana isn't as bad as it looks. It looks like an actual city without the alligators and swamps I was imagining. We pull into a grocery store parking lot and get out stretching our legs. It's a ghost town out here, I thought that if this city's air isn't that infected yet, that there would be more people, but it's untouched. I'm standing next to Lila about to whisper something over to her when Zara comes walking over and pulls me into a deep kiss, it feels to forced, I feel detached. With Lila, we molded together when we kissed, the whole world didn't exist, we were in love. With Zara, all I want to do is make her stop, but she will kill Lila, I know I probably could take her down, but we need her skills in fighting and since she is immune, that gives us an advantage. Lila is staring at us with tears once again forming, I pull Zara away and she looks over at Lila with a smirk and walks towards the camper to unlock it. I walk towards Lila to talk to her, but the words that I have never wanted to hear from the only woman I have ever loved come out of her mouth quietly, "Don't talk to me Kai, you can consider yourself dead to me."
That hit me hard. What have I done?
