Now isn't so bad
I woke slowly, hearing the sound of someone walking in the halls, and the first thing I saw was Wyatt's sleeping face. I stared. He had a bit of gunk in his eye, and his hair was a tangled mess, but he was so beautiful. Something was between us, though, curled against my stomach. I looked down at the sleeping form of little May. I smiled, looking up at Wyatt again and sighing happily before closing my eyes.
A second later, May stirred. A hard poke came to my chin. I opened my eyes, my smile growing as I looked down at her. She smiled back, her long hair a little nest around her head, as she rubbed at her eyes.
"Good morning," she said in her quiet little voice,
"Good morning," I said back. She looked around, her eyes focussing on the window, which shined from the morning light, the pale curtains around it pulled back to let it stream in. I smiled at her. "Do you want to look out?"
"Yeah," she said.
I got up and lifted her, carrying her over on my hip to the light. She put her hand on the glass, looking out over the plain garden, medium in size with plenty of space to grow plants, but with nothing more than trees that were probably already there and bushes not well maintained. I sighed, shaking my head. Men.
"Uncle Wyatt has a boring house." May said, making me laugh a little. Her eyes shifted, focusing on space, and then
she looked at me. "What are those things?""What things?" I asked, wrinkling me brow. She looked around us, waving her hand through the air.
"The tiny things floating in the air," she said. I realized she meant the dust, made visible in the rays of light. I smiled.
As a kid, I loved fairy tales. I remember the magic, how wonderful it was, and how my parents gave it to me. I remember what they told me the dust was before I found out myself.
"They're fairies," I told her, smiling at the speckles. Her little eyes widened, her jaw dropping, and she looked at me in awe.
"Really? Real live fairies?" she asked. nodded, grinning.
"Absolutely. They're always around, and they love to dance in the sunlight. They're so fast that when you swing your hand," I said, demonstrating, "they just fly around it no matter how suddenly you do it."
"Wow," she said in amazement, whipping her hand around the air repeatedly, watching the dust fly to and fro. I nodded.
"And do you know what the best part is?" I asked. She looked at me, excitement in her eyes. I closed my eyes. "If you close your eyes, and think real hard, then they can hear your thoughts. You can't hear them because their voices are so small, but you can tell them any secret you want and they will never tell anyone else.""Like a diary?" she asked. I opened my eyes, seeing her own were closed. I smiled.
"But better," I said. She opened her eyes, giggling. I grinned back. She closed her eyes again.
A sound behind me turned my head. I looked as Wyatt was standing from his bed. As he stretched, he smiled over at me, his eyes soft and his smile wide. I blushed a little, both at how cute he was and in slight embarrassment at how much he heard of that cheesy story.
A soft knock at the door, which was open, caught our attention. Lily stood there, staring in and smiling at her happy daughter. Wyatt said something in Mandarin, saying May's name with it. May's eyes opened and she looked to her mom, beginning to say things excitedly in Mandarin as she approached.
Lily and I carefully exchanged the four year old. She smiled to me, bowing slightly as a sign of thanks, and smiled to Wyatt as well before taking her daughter, who was still rambling in Chinese, out of the room. I sighed, looking to Wyatt, still blushing.
"How much of that did you hear?" I asked. He grinned, walking over to me.
"I was awake before you took her to the window," he said. I blushed harder looking down at the floor. He put his finger under my chin and lifted my face to his, softly kissing my lips before looking at me with another smile. "I can't believe I never heard about these fairies before. I could have had so many more friends as a child."
"Too bad, huh?" I asked. He grinned. I smiled, grabbing his hand and leading him out of the room to the bathroom. There, I grabbed a tissue and cleaned the gunk from his eye. He blinked at me. "You had a little something in your eye.
He stared at me, his face soft. After a few seconds, he looked away to the mirror at our reflection. I looked too, seeing a girl with wild hair and a man with sharp eyes. A girl and a man. I felt a twinge of doubt I never really considered until now.
"There are moments," Wyatt said, capturing my attention. We looked to each other, staring before he continued. "There are moments where I feel like we will be together forever. But then I step back and.."
We fell into silence, looking from each other down at the space between us, at our feet. I understood. He takes a step back and sees he's a man and I'm just a girl. I haven't gone through the experiences of an adult yet, and he's gone through all of them. Hell, this is my first time living from home and this is my first relationship. He's my first real friend who isn't a part of my family. I'm some naive little girl and he's a full grown man.
"Let's not think about that," I said, looking up at him. He smiled sadly. "Let's just have now. Now isn't so bad." gone through the experiences of an adult yet, and he's gone through all of them. "No. It's not even close to bad," he agreed, slipping his hand into mine. He led me down the hall to the kitchen, where Lily and Sue were preparing breakfast. I joined in to help as Wyatt scooped May into his arms and began talking to her in
Mandarin. I watched out of the corner of my eye, making a note to learn Chinese sometime soon.
