Nikki’s POV

For what seemed like hours I just sat there staring at the board. I didn’t know how to react; therefor I didn’t react at all. Everyone was staring at me, but I was used to it.

“Damn why does the lesbian get hooked up with sexiest girl in the school?” Mike joked and the class began to snicker.

I just stared at him ignoring his ignorance as best I could. Mike was the most degrading boy that I had ever met and he was an idiot. I will never forget freshman year when I had to sit next to him and his best friend and all he wanted to talk about is how this girl’s you know what smelled like a fish dinner.

“Oh shut up Mike,” April snapped then turned to flash me a slight smile. I know it sounds so cliché but my heart actually did feel like it stopped. Did I mention the fact that I’m a virgin? Yeah I guess that sort of slipped my mind. I’m 17 about to stroll into 18 and I haven’t even had my first kiss. The farthest I’ve gone is a girl kissing my cheek and that was my friend back in kindergarten. Sexual Frustration is beyond a bitch.

“Alright class I want you all to get with your partners and start discussing ideas about what your big project will be!” Mr. Newmar announced. The class did that awkward thing where no one moves because they either don’t know who the person they’re working with is, or they don’t know if they should be the one to move. April was the only one who actually moved. When she walked over to me I had to get myself together before every word that poured out was staccato.

“Hey Nikki,” April smiled at me politely. The way she looked at me was as if she didn’t know just exactly what to make of me. It wasn’t a rude look, but just a slightly nervous look. I found it to be quite adorable.

“Hey,” I smiled back and ran my fingers through my medium length brown hair. Every time I got nervous I touched my hair…I would be touching my hair a lot during this project.

“So what ideas do you have for this awesome project?” She asked sarcastically and we both laughed. I couldn’t help but stare at her shining orange red hair. April’s natural hair color was so orangey red that a lot of people wanted to think that she dyed it, but she didn’t.

“A volcano?” I suggested jokingly and she let out a giggle then ran her pencil along the lab table.

“Hmmm a volcano that lets out purple lava would be cool,” She chuckled. April was obsessed with the color purple. She wore purple almost every single day and all of her school books were some shade of purple. A few people would joke around and call her Daphne because of all the purple she wore.

“Sorry about the comment Mike made,” I apologized and looked down shyly. I know I didn’t do anything wrong, but I felt the need to apologize for Mike’s stupidity. I hated when boys disrespected girls, especially classy girls like April.

“Don’t apologize for that asshole. He’s just mad that I kept turning him down and all. He doesn’t realize that I have a boyfriend,” April explained and my heart dropped a bit.

“Oh, you have a boyfriend?” I questioned. I tried as hard as I could not to sound hurt, but I knew that it showed at least a little bit. Hopefully she wouldn’t catch on.

“Yeah, Adam Douglass. He’s on the soccer team. I’m sure you know him. He’s the only redhead on the team,” April laughed and suddenly it clicked.

I had seen April and Adam around school together a couple times, but since they weren’t all over each other I didn’t think they were together. It made sense though. She was playboy bunny status with gorgeous red hair, and he was professional soccer status with red hair. They would surely be voted the cutest couple…if they stayed together that long.

“Ohh, yeah I know him. He’s um, good,” I lied. I wasn’t a fan of soccer at all; to be honest I wasn’t a fan of any sports. It wasn’t that I couldn’t play them; I just didn’t see the point in them. Yeah it gets you in shape, but why can’t you just use the gym or something?

“Mhm, I’m always at his games trying to support him. He keeps bugging me about joining a sport, but to be honest I can’t stand them. A membership to the gym is all I need,” April stated and a smile began to form on my lips. Suddenly I heard Mr. Newmar clear his throat from behind us.

“Excuse me Nikki and April, but I paired you two together for a reason. You two don’t really talk that much so I figured staying focused wouldn’t be a problem. Am I wrong?” He inquired bitterly and April and I just stared at him.

“Um, no Mr. Newmar. Nikki and I just want to get to know each other first before we get started. After all, breaking the ice is important when working together,” April voiced and Mr. Newmar’s sour attitude began to change.

“Well I guess you’re right. But remember, I expect an amazing project from you two so don’t disappoint Uncle Newmar,” Mr. Newmar chuckled and April and I both scrunched up our faces. Mr. Newmar was beyond creepy. Not the pedophile creepy, but that creepy where you feel bad for him because he doesn’t know he’s creepy.

“Well that was awkward,” April pointed out then pulled out her phone to check the time. A few seconds later the bell rang and people practically ran out the room. Some people just can’t handle the awkwardness of a teacher picked partner projects.

“Yes! It’s time to go home!” April exclaimed then gathered up her books.

“I know right haha, so um how are we going to keep in contact with this whole project?” I asked. I didn’t care about the project of course, but I did care about talking to April again. I watched as she reached in her bag and pulled out a tiny purple notebook and a pen. She scribbled a few digits onto the paper and then handed it to me.

“Call don’t text. I hate texting unless the person’s voice annoys me…which is why I text all the time haha. Your voice is nice though so call. I’ll see you later Nikki,” April smiled and I couldn’t help but blush. I had gotten my first number, and the best part was that it was April Kreggs’ number.
