It was kind of weird how Alex wanted to hang out with me I mean he’s two years older than me, that makes him eighteen.
“How far is it?” I asked watching my breathe disappear into the night air. It can get really cold at night in California and so hot at day.
“Were here.”
Alex let my arm drop from his and took off his shoes and ran into the dark.
“Hey where are you going?” I called after him. I tried to step forward but found I was sinking into something cold and silky. Sand, were at the beach, Alex took me to the beach.
I took of my heels and ran after him. I saw a light up ahead and made my way to it. As I got closer I heard voices and music.
“Alex?” I said a little quieter.
Something wrapped around my shoulders making me jump.
“Here It’s cold.” I heard Alex’s voice behind me. I pulled the blanket tighter around myself.
“Thanks but why are we here?” I said, teeth chattering.
“I just thought it would be nice if you met my friends.” He said not looking at me but the group of people.
“Um yeah that’s nice of you but can’t we do that at school or something I don’t want to miss the party and Claudia is waiting for me...” I staggered on.
“I’m joking I don’t know any of these people. Their all drug addicts who have no lives.” He said laughing. I didn’t find it funny at all how could anyone, I just frowned at him and started walking back the way we had come.
“Hey wait, come on!” He caught up to me.
“Lets talk. I wanna no more about you.” He said looking like an eager child waiting for a cookie.
“Fine, but only for a while then we have to go back to the party. OK?” I said serious as possible.
We ended up talking for hours nonstop and it felt really good, Well I didn’t really talk much but it was much better that I kept quiet about my life.
“So you moved here from where?” Alex asked.
“Australia. Except I’ve nearly lost my accent.” I said.
“No, I love your accent don’t lose it!” He protested making me giggle.
“What are your parents like?” He asked a couple minutes later.
I froze fearing he wouldn’t be interested and find me boring enough not to talk to me again.
“I don’t know...” I said with tears starting to form.
“Valentine, you don’t have to tell me It’s fine.”
“They were in a fire when I was three years old.” The only thing I remembered from that night was the smell of smoke blocking my nose and an image of me running down the hall with someone holding my hand. When I had reached the front door I turned back and saw my mother fall to the ground in flames my father had let go of my hand with a cry and fell after her with something in his back. After that everything went black and I was in an orphanage for the next 13 years never knowing who or what killed my parents.
I was now crying into Alex’s chest without realizing it and felt a rush of embarrassment. I stood up and said
“I’m sorry, I have to go but you can’t tell anyone about what I just said, not even Claudia.” I ran off and found my way back to the party. Claudia was standing outside with a guy who I couldn’t quite see.
“Hey! Val where the hell have you been?” She called after me. When I got closer I saw that the man was a police officer. Oh shit what she do this time I thought.
“What’s up?” I asked looking him up and down. He had a gun on his right side which made me shiver.
“Don’t ‘What’s up?’ me! Where have you been?” She looked like she had been crying. She had a tissue in her hand and it had stains of mascara.
“No where, what happened are you OK?” I put a worried look on my face.
“No-no-no.” She trailed off in sobs. The police officer grunted and stepped forward.
“Ma’am I’m sorry but there has been a murder.” He looked me in the eyes.
“So we need to know where you were for the night.” He put his arm lightly on my shoulders urging me towards a police car.
“Wait where are you taking me?” I asked.
“To the police station, we need to ask you a couple of questions.” He opened the door and I looked back at the hall, Alex was standing next to his sister and there were a group of people staring at me but I wasn’t looking at them I was looking at Him standing in the door way with blood on his hands. What did he do well, I was about to find out?
