Since Rose had been left on parallel Earth once more, this time with a version of the Doctor that had grown from his detached hand, the two decided to marry, but remained living with Rose's parents and her baby brother Tony. Rose took to calling him John, as the Doctor had frequently used the alias John Smith when attempting to blend in.
After a few years of happily living together, John became ill and was admitted into hospital. It turned out that the human part of Donna that had become comingled with time lord DNA held a fatal human illness. Due to being so human, John was unable to just regenerate to get rid of this illness. He died three months after diagnosis. Rose was devastated.
The universe seemed hell bent upon ensuring that she and the Doctor could never be together. She went into mourning and refused to leave the grounds of the house. The closest to civilisation she'd get from the house was the bottom of the garden. And she needed an entirely new wardrobe as she refused to wear anything but black, which she hadn't previously had in abundance in her wardrobe.

Clara had been brought back from death by the grieving twelfth incarnation of the Doctor. But she hadn't been successfully brought back to life, as she was still stuck between two heartbeats. Between her penultimate heartbeat and her final heartbeat. She, with the help of Me (formerly Ashildr), ensured the Doctor's safe return to his ship, after she was forced to wipe his mind of her, leaving a great portion of his past two incarnations empty.
Then she fled. Me travelled with her for a while - they had a great many adventures together - but Me eventually left the ship, to live some of her life as if she weren't immortal. And so Clara was alone. She didn't like being alone in the vastness of a TARDIS, but there wasn't much she could do.
Then, while she was flying her ship one day, between adventures, her chest seized up in terrible agony, and she found her body splayed across the controls. She was crash landing, and it was too late for her to do much, other than to soften the landing. She had no idea where she was. She had no idea when she was. She had no idea what she'd face. All she knew was that she needed help. So she went outside.
There was someone watching from somewhere nearby, outside the ship; she could sense it! "Help me," she exhaled. Before she could look around to see if anyone had heard her, her legs gave way beneath her.
She dropped down, down, down to the ground. Except she never quite hit the ground, as someone caught her. She felt her head get dizzy, and noise started fading. She heard someone, probably the person, talk for help. She figured they'd shouted, but it sounded like it was miles away from her. Then, she couldn't hear anything as she passed out.
