When they had reached the ship, Clara and Rose sat in one of the booths of the diner part, to start discussing ideas on what they could change the outside to, and to talk more about their travels with the Doctor. Rose also asked why she had mentioned Missy in the first place.
Clara smiled slightly. "Okay, so I designed myself a sonic and had my TARDIS create it and, when you went out after your mother mentioned mum, I pulled it out and scanned myself. Y'know, to check. Apparently I'm already around 85% Gallifreyan..."
"Wait, your body is actually changing?" Rose asked, shocked.
Clara nodded, then continued talking. "Yeah. I was shocked by that too. Then as I was looking through my pockets in my jacket, I found my psychic paper that I bought in a market at Janet, in the FEMA system, and I'd had a message on it from a general on Gallifrey."
"Janet? Who's Janet?"
"Oh, no! Everyone I tell about the paper says the same. Janet was the planet the market was on. I mean, it was actually a modified asteroid, but it had been enlarged to the size of a planet and had its own orbit, thanks to the colonists who modified it."
"Okay," Rose replied, a little shocked but taking it in her stride, as she always had with the Doctor. "So, what did this general say?"
"Well, they told me that I needed to get back to Gallifrey asap and that they'd reverse the changes and that, if I really wanted, they'd let me keep the ship. And here's the weird bit, right, I was holding the paper and thinking about the message. What I'd say to the general if I could. I said that the changes had me in too much pain and that I'd be unable to get to Gallifrey until the pain had passed. And then I had a reply!"
"You had a reply?" Rose exclaimed, surprised.
"Yeah! The general told me that would defeat the object of me going back to Gallifrey, and that I should try not to interfere with other species when I returned to travelling..."
"What did you say?" Rose asked, really interested in this topic of conversation.
"Well, I said I'd try, but that I can't stop myself helping someone in need. Personally, I think it's partly travelling with the Doctor, and partly that he won't travel with someone who would be able to just walk away. What do you reckon?"
"Oh, it's definitely both. We picked up this kid for a short while - we went a couple of places with him - and he just wasn't quite right, y'know? He was a little too quiet when he was far off in the future, and he wasn't actually involved in any of the saving people bit.
"You know what he was doing? Having a spike put into his head. If you're around him and click your fingers, a diamond on his forehead opens to show some of his brain! I can tell you, the Doctor was not impressed by that! We took him home after that, and the Doctor was really harsh on him for being such an idiot. But, at the same time, he laughed a lot at the fact that anyone clicking their fingers opened his head. He liked that bit."
"Man!" Clara laughed, already imagining what this must've looked like. "I wanna meet him! If just for the hilarity of seeing that!"
Rose was soon also laughing. "You sound a bit like the Doctor! I guess he never really changes when he, y'know, changes!" Rose paused, taking a minute to compose herself. "So, you were getting to Missy?" she asked.
"Yeah," Clara replied, slowly stopping laughing, "after I put my psychic paper away, I found my phone. The Doctor did something to it so it has signal literally everywhere..."
"Yeah, he did that to mine, too. We were about to watch the end of the world. Just after I'd helped him save London from the Nestine Consciousness."
"Right, and I had a message. Well, three really. It was organised more like an email. That's just how Missy is, really. Very overdramatic. She was letting me know that the Doctor still couldn't remember me, but that he was alright. He has a new companion. Apparently she's called Bill.
"Missy also called me tolerable which, considering she pushed me into a sewer then hid me in a Dalek casing in an attempt to get the Doctor to kill me, is a massive compliment from her. That's why I'd said that she was making me feel things."
"Wait, she did what?" Rose asked, shocked not even beginning to cover it. "And the Doctor still lets her near him?"
"Apparently she's locked in this prison-like vault to attone for that, among other things. Which other things, I don't know, but the list is almost certainly long."
"Okay," Rose said, not feeling reassured at all. "But still, she tried to make the Doctor kill you?"
"That's not unusual for Missy. She's tried to kill us loads. Though, she did also put us in contact in the first place."
"Okay, I need to hear that one!" Rose replied, surprised.
Clara smiled, remembering the first time she met the Doctor. "So, I babysat for a friend when I first met the Doctor. I also had a room in their house, which was very kind of them. Anyway, I was looking after the kids, Angie and Artie, and I couldn't find their internet.
"The first time, Angie told me which one, but it disconnected again, so I called the number this lady had given me. I later found out that the lady was Missy, but that's not important. So I called the number and asked him to help me find the internet. The other side of the line went dead when I said my mnemonic for the letters of the password. Next thing I know, there's a knock at the door, and he's there in a monk's costume.
"He said we'd been speaking on the phone. Said he was called the Doctor. He'd also pointed to the TARDIS as he said 'mobile phone'. When I asked why he'd pointed to it when he'd said mobile phone..."
"Oh my god!" Rose exclaimed. "Don't tell me he said 'it's a surprisingly accurate description'!"
Clara laughed. "No he did! He said exactly that!"
"Oh my god! He really hasn't changed after all this time! I met one of his old companions at a school we were investigating. She was investigating too as a freelance journalist and she ended up helping us out with the Krillitane. That's what the aliens were called. They were disguised as the staff. We didn't like each other at first. Like when you meet your current partner's ex, but soon we were laughing about him instead. Sarah Jane Smith, she was called. Lovely woman. You'd love her. Did he still stroke bits of the TARDIS with you?"
"Oh, yeah! One time, he was trying to get me to talk to her as well, then the ship was jolted because of some grappling thing and I was slingshot into a completely different time stream and the only thing I could do was ask her to keep me safe and go wherever she'd let me. We had to cross into our own time stream to fix everything. I didn't remember it at the time, but I still felt an odd urge to actually talk with the TARDIS after that."
"That is mad!" Rose exclaimed, laughing.
