Being in a small village like Aldgate, everyone knew everyone and no one thought for things for themselves. And the one thing that everyone loved was gossip.
Especially at the village church. Mostly, people would talk about how they were gonna bring offerings to the vampire King.
Endeavor's minions will always come collect the taxes by late afternoon and make their way up to the mountains. It was all so simple, to bring in profits, the villagers will grow crops, sell useless items and or livestock, and so on.
Some people even make their own liquor. But the church says it's forbidden so often people would find ways to make and sell. And sometimes people often gamble with nearby towns to get more money.
You were sitting in church with your family. While the pastor was giving his sermon, you turned your head out the window, it felt like someone was watching you almost. But all you saw was just the houses and other buildings. You was just coming back into reality when the pastor went on a new topic.
"As you all know, the time is near that we give our offerings to the King Endeavor in thanks for keeping us safe these past 18 years. So please, save as much as you can for the offerings. We thank you for your contribution." The pastor said.
Church was led out and you finally took your hair out of it's tight bun letting it breathe while getting a few looks by a couple of the women. You just rolled your eyes and opened up your book. It was about two men in love, and you can never put the book down.
"(y/n), you shouldn't read so much." Your father said.
You didn't respond, you just looked at him about back at your book. "But it's amazing, it's Yaoi." You said with a smile.
A few people heard you and gasped.
"Dear Lord, she's been tainted by the Devil!" Someone called out.
"It's her mother's fault, for not raising her daughter right. And letting her read the book of evil." Another person said.
"No, it's the Husband's fault! He doesn't keep his wife and child in line!"
"Yaoi is beautiful!" You protested.
You father quickly covered your mouth and dragged you away.
"She's a little sick." Your mother nervously laughed.
You made it back home and your mother closed the door. "(y/n), you're gonna be the death of me child."
"I can't help if I'm different from everyone else. That's just me." You crossed your arms over your chest.
"(y/n), maybe it's best you put the books away for a while." Your father said. He then looks at his pocket watch. "I better get going." He grabs his hat and coat and leaves the house.
"(y/n), get started on the laundry okay?" Your mother ordered.
"Fine." You grabbed the basket and walked out the back door.

After hours of scrubbing and washing, you were pinning the clothes on the wire. You gave a sigh as you looked up at the forest that led to the mountains, wondering what was beyond this judgemental town.
Inside the house, your mother was making tea when your father came in with a distressed look on his face.
"What happened? What did you do?" You mother asked.
"I lost all our money in a card game." He said.
"You idiot! What our we gonna do?! The tax collectors come tomorrow, and if we don't have the money..."
"Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it."
"How are you gonna take care of it?" Your mother asked.
"Don't question me, I'll work something out."
