You were there when I was born

You were there as I took my first steps

You were there on my first day of school

You were there when I came home crying

You were there when I fell in love

You were there when I was heartbroken

You were there when I went to university

But you weren't there when I graduated

You weren't there when I moved to Japan

You weren't there when I got married

You won't be here when I have kids

You won't be here when I have grandkids

But Grandpa, you'll be there when I'm done

When I leave this mortal earth for good

Whether it's in my memories, or in another world

Then we'll talk, and catch up like two old friends.
