I tap my foot impatiently, my teeth digging into my bottom lip. I try to focus my thoughts on something else, anything else, but it's not working.
I stand, pacing the small room, the tile cold under my feet. My heart races as I check the timer I set, the few minutes seeming more like hours.
My breath hitches when I find there is only three seconds left, the alarm sounding moments later.
I rush over to the sink, stopping as I watch myself in the mirror. My hair is pulled up carelessly, my checks hinted with a rosy pink.
"You can do this," I breathe.
My hands shake as I run them over my hair. I swallow, trying to find a normal breathing pattern.
You're being so dramatic, just flip it over.
I nod to myself, taking a deep breath as I turn the test over.
I study the lines as my heart pounds in my ears.
I place my hand over my mouth when reality really sets in, my eyes glossing over.
A noise sounds from the front room, causing the test to fall from my hand, into the sink.
"Kayc?" Sean. "I'm home."
I quickly grab the test, my hands still shaking, and hide it in the cabinet under the sink.
I gather myself in the mirror, collecting the sweat from my forehead and tears from under my eyes.
I breathe, in and out, before stepping into the hallway.
"Hey, love," I greet him in the living room, praying my voice sounds normal.
He smiles when he sees me, but it quickly disappears, "What's wrong?"
"No- nothings wrong," I stutter. "Why do you say something's wrong?"
He laughs, walking up to me. "Because I know you."
He cups my cheek, rubbing his thumb over my skin. "Talk to me," his eyes search mine.
I sigh into his palm, closing my eyes.
He notices my silence, "Tell me," his voice is more serious now.
I look at him once again, my emotions taking over my body. I take his hand in mine, squeezing it as tears cloud my vision.
"I'm pregnant," I whisper, my voice cracking.
Sean stares at me for a minute, his features blank.
"You're what?" He asks, pulling his hand from mine.
My heart sinks a little, "I know this isn't a great time, and we weren't planning it but," I touch my palm to my stomach, "we're having a baby."
"Oh my God," he runs his hands over his face.
Tears wet my checks now as I watch him. "You're not happy," my voice shakes.
His hands fall to his sides as he stares at me, shaking his head as a smile forms on his lips.
He steps closer to me, wrapping his arms around my waist. He lifts me up, spinning me around as he shouts, "We're having a baby!"
Once he finally sets me down, he finds my forehead with his. He intertwines our fingers as he smiles at me, his dimples showing.
"Am I happy?" He laughs, shaking his head, "I'm going to be a dad, Kayc."
My smile widens at his words, my heart warm. "The best dad ever," I whisper.
"And you the best mom," he says before pressing his lips to mine.
