The once and future kings | A Merthur Hogwarts AU

Arthur Pendragon

Excited to see all the new students, Merlin watched from the Slytherin table. His friend Gwaine sat next to him, ignoring the rules that he was supposed to sit at the Gryffindor table. Merlin didn't mind, he knew that Gwaine wouldn't be noticed anyway. All the first years were lined up in two's as they walked in, each amazed at the sight of the place. Merlin had felt the same when he had started last year. It took him some time to get used not to wearing his necktie all the time, Merlin remembered with a smile.

"Hope none of them get sorted into Slytherin, ey?" Gwaine said teasingly, elbowing him playfully in the shoulder. Merlin was the only one to laugh as the rest of the Slytherin's scoffed. Merlin didn't bode well with the other Slytherin's, if he was honest. "You're the only nice one in the house."

At the end of the sorting ceremony, Professor McGonagall announced that there was a new second year student who needed to be sorted as well. Merlin's head shot up, trying to get a good look at his now fellow second year. He had blond hair and was around the same height a Merlin. 

"Pendragon, Arthur." Professor McGonagall called. Merlin felt his heart skip a beat. Arthur Pendragon? How could it be chance that two wizards both with the name of famous people  would meet at school? He didn't know anyone else with a name as famous as his, and now there was a Pendragon at his school? Like prince Arthur?

"Hey, Prince Arthur is here to see you, Merlin." Gwaine joked but Merlin ignored him and waited to see what house he was put into. The famous wizard Merlin was a known Slytherin and although Arthur Pendragon didn't go to Hogwarts, he was known to be brave and courageous, so if he was even a descendent he'd surely be in Gryffindor. Merlin felt stupid suddenly. Of course it isn't the Arthur Pendragon, just as he isn't the Merlin.

"GRYFFINDOR!" The hat roared. Merlin felt his heart racing and tried to ignore it. Gwaine decided to go back to the Gryffindor table to see if he could talk to 'Prince Arthur' as he already named him. Merlin rolled his eyes as Gwaine left, missing his company already.

"Prince Arthur, a pleasure to meet royalty. I am Gwaine." Gwaine said with a dramatic bow. Arthur didn't seem all pleased as Gwaine sat next to him. Merlin could hear them from his table and scoffed as he took a sip of water. He'd never been a fan of pumpkin juice. "My friend Merlin wishes to make your humble acquaintance, sire. Since you were good friends in your past lives -"

"Don't mock my name. I don't know a Merlin and nor do you so shut up." Merlin's ears went pink. He wondered what Arthur will say when he find's out what Gwaine says is true. Gwaine did know a Merlin and he was sitting on the Slytherin table as they spoke. Also, past lives? What if he really was prince Arthur and he really was Merlin? Merlin shook his head, trying to ignore what he had read about Necromancy.

"Ah, but that is where you are wrong. Merlin, come here, would you?" Gwaine said. Merlin looked at Gwaine, his face as red as his favourite neck scarf. Gwaine used his hand to gesture for Merlin to get up again and he did, nervous as all hell. He'd never felt this nervous meeting anyone before. "Merlin, meet the once and future king."

"H-h-hello, my name is Merlin Dragonlord. It's nice to meet you, Arthur." Merlin mentally kicked himself for stuttering. He could see the gears turning in Arthur's head. He wondered if Arthur was having the same thought's that he had had.  Probably not, Merlin doubted that Arthur even cared that the two of them were named as famous figures from the past.

"You really are Merlin." Arthur said with a smile. Merlin nodded, feeling less awkward now. He could see Dumbledore looking at the pair of them with a twinkle in his eyes. Did he have the same suspicions as him? Or did he know something he didn't? "It's nice to meet you, Merlin."

Was this Arthur the once and future king?
