Can's POV

Sunday morning, the day of P'wan's university fair, came bright and early to me. I was ready long before ten o'clock which was the time P'wan and I had agreed upon to meet. She and Good were to pick me up from my house and then we were to proceed to P'Wan's university to attend the fundraising fair for selected orphanages.

I would have loved for Tin to come along but his left leg had not yet fully recuperated from the injuries he had suffered from his road accident. I had told him all about the fair but I could not tell him that I was going to be in the company of P'Wan because I did not want to trigger any jealousy from him.

At ten o'clock on the dot, my phone rang. The call was from Good.

"We are outside your gate," said Good when I swiped my phone to take his call.

"I'll be there," I said and ended the call.

I kissed my mom and dad good bye.

"Take care, son," said my dad.

"Are you going without Tin?" asked mom.

I was a bit surprised that mom was showing concern for Tin. She had been the one who was so opposed to me and Tin getting married but now she seemed to have accepted him and cared for him like her own son. Should I start getting jealous?

"He can't come with me," I explained, "his left leg is not yet fully recovered."

"Who are you going with?" she asked.

I was starting to get annoyed by her interrogation.

"My classmate and best friend Good," I replied. I intentionally left out P'Wan for fear that she would start making an issue out of it.

"Okay, then," she said, "have fun but don't stay out too late."

I ran out the door and went to meet Good who was standing just outside the gate.

I gave him a buddy hug and he motioned for me to sit in the front with P'Wan while he took the passenger seat in the back.

"Hi, good morning," I greeted P'Wan as I climbed inside her car.

"Hi, Can," she said, smiling at me. I couldn't help noticing how pretty her smile was and how it lightened up her facial features.

"Don't forget to buckle up," she said.

"Oh yeah, sorry," I said, struggling with the seat belt.

"I really must bring this car to the dealer where I bought it from so that they can replace the seat belt," she said, while leaning towards me to help me fasten it. "It's only the front seat that has the problem. The ones in the back are so easy to fasten, right, Good?"

I did not hear Good's reply because I got distracted by the fragrance of P'Wan's long flowing hair, some strands of which touched my cheek as she leaned close to me.

"There," she said, satisfied by the sound of the seat belt, finally clicking into place. "As soon as I get the chance, I will bring this car to the dealer."

"Until then, let's go and have fun at the fair!" I said, smiling widely at her.

"Good idea!" she replied, "let's go!"

I could tell that she was in a hurry to get to the fair because she was going just a little beyond the speed limit. I was getting a bit worried that we might get pulled over by a traffic officer.

Her university was close to an hour's drive because it was just outside Bangkok's city limits.

Along the way, her car played several songs that I was familiar with and that I could sing along to. Her face brightened up when she noticed that I was singing along with her music.

"You have a good singing voice," she commented, briefly glancing at me and then quickly took her attention back to the road.

"Nah," I said, blushing a little, "I have a very ordinary singing voice. All I can say is that I can sing without going off key."

"You're too modest," she said, smiling again.

"I can sing, too," said Good from behind us.

P'Wan and I looked at each other guiltily. We had forgotten that Good was sitting in the back seat.
