I smiled as I looked back at my mother, she was sitting on our porch. Rocking back and forth in a rocking chair. I heard the slight russle of leave and turned to see my father, who was walking into the clearing.
"Daddy!" I squealed. I ran towards him, jumping into his strong arms.
"Hello, Pumpkin. How was your day?" He asked.
"Good! Mommy made chocolate chip cookies." I said with the world's largest smile plastered on my face.
"Yum. Why don't we go eat some?" He suggested.
"YEAH!" I screamed, I jumped out of his arms and ran towards the house, turning to see my father chuckling, and following behind me. I bolted up the steps of our small house and grabbed two cookies off the coffee table, then I turned to walk outside.
A blood curling scream, erupted through out the clearing. It sounded like my mother! I dropped the cookies and ran to the door. My mother and father were lying on the ground surrounded by wolves. I felt tears slide down my cheeks.
"Mommy? Daddy?" I whispered. I felt pure shock overtake my body, when one of the wolves shifted and I saw someone I never thought could kill... Daniel.
"Come with us." He whispered.
"No!" I screamed. Daniel stepped forward and leaned for me.
"NO!"
"NO!"
"NO!" I screeched and jolted awake. On my face was a thin layer of sweat. "Thank god, it was just a dream." I rubbed my eyes and glanced over at the cheap alarm clock. 5:56 pm.
I hadn't realized I had slept so late... I groaned and threw the thin covers off my legs. I ran my hand through my hair and stood up. I looked at the mirror that securely placed on a vanity, I looked like a mess.
My hair was a rat's nest. My eyes were bloodshot, and I looked like I was about to burst into tears. I looked away, shaking my head. I decided that a warm shower might help. I stood up and walked over to the small bathroom. I stripped out of my clothes and turned on the shower. I put my hand under the water,
"I guess a cold shower will work to." I mumbled and stepped in. The cold beads massaged my back. For what seemed like hours, I just stood in the shower. I ran my hands through my soaking wet hair and shut the faucet off. I ripped the towel off of it's holder and wrapped it around my body. I walked out of the bathroom and picked my bag up off of the floor. I pulled out some clothes and dropped the towel.
I slowly pulled on a pair of jeans, a tee shirt, and some combat boots. I pulled my wet hair into a ponytail and threw the towel in the bathroom. I grabbed my bag off the floor, and my phone off of the vanity. I walked out the motel room door, heading for the front desk.
"Helloo." I said to the woman behind the desk.
"Hi! Are you leaving?" She asked.
"Yeah. Here is the key." I responded, I placed the key on the desk and swiftly turned, not in the mood for small talk. I walked out the front door, hearing her say, "Have a good day!".
I looked at my car, there was a small vanilla enevelope underneath the windshield wiper.
I looked at it and pulled it out from under it carefully. On the front it read,
Zia
I sighed and popped the tunk. I threw my bag into it and then slammed it shut. I plopped down in the driver's seat and ripped the enevelope open.
Dear Zia,
You are Invited to the Annual Elder's Masquerade Ball. You are required to wear a ball gown and mask. Please join us on July 28th at the Elder's Mansion in Maine! Thank you!
See you soon,
Mary Epscott
I groaned, every year I found an invitation to the Elder's Ball, I seldom attended. I found that they were a waste of time. But... Alexander would never show up somewhere with so many werewolves, even he wouldn't feel safe there... It was the perfect place to stay safe for awhile...
"Guess I have to go find a dress..." I whispered.
I decided that I should head straight to Maine, maybe taking a tiny visit in New York City on the way there. I had just over two weeks to get there. I found myself driving down a busy highway again, my head hurt, my eyes drooped, I was a mess. I didn't know what to do. I missed Daniel, I really did, God I hate to admit it, but I kind of even missed that loser Aaron. I wanted to turn around and go back, but they hated me... I mean, who wouldn't?
A loud car horn blared behind me, I looked down at the speed dial and saw that I had slowed to 50 miles. I sighed and slammed my foot down on the gas pedal, my car roaring to life and speeding down the lane.
I arrived in New York about a week later, I barely stoppped for rest, I was afraid Alexander would show up at any time. I got little to no sleep most nights, I had dropped a few pounds due to my horrible eating habits. I really needed to shape up, I could show up at the ball like this...
As I drove down the packed streets of New York I found myself staring at people. They all looked happy, totally oblivious to the things happening around them. One couple was holding hands, laughing... but behind them a homeless man was begging for money. How could they be happy when someone was so miserable right next to them? I had never really understood humans.
My phone began to ring, erupting the silence in my car. I dug through my purse and pulled it out,
Tristan
I sighed and pressed 'answer', I was going to have to talk to him sooner or later.
"WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!" Tristan screamed in the phone.
"Quiet down! I have a headache." I responded while rubbing my temple, then gripping the steering wheel.
"Answer me, Zia."
"I have been around, okay!"
"You just up and left! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was worried sick. We hadn't seen you, or heard from you, and Alexander hadn't made any spectales! We thought he took you! Daniel freaked out, said he was going to rip his heart out! We had to tie him down to keep him from trying to find you!"
"I'm sorry, okay. It's just... I heard some stuff and I realized that I didn't belong there. I should have called it's just... I have been a mess lately. Way to paranoid, crazy tired. I dropped like ten pounds, I am border line anorexic."
"Oh, Zia. Why would you think you don't belong here? When you didn't show up at training, some of those kids looked kinda sad. They were looking forward to being as strong as you, they told me that. Everyone misses you. Come back, Zia."
"I can't, not right now. I have a previous engagment to attend. Maybe I will, I love you Tristan. But, I have to go..." I said. I hung up before he could convince me otherwise. I shoved my phone in my purse and pulled over, finding a parking spot. I managed to find one a couple blocks away from the stores I wanted to go to. I grabbed my purse and locked my car, walking down the street.
The warm midday sun, shined down on me, as if it was trying to cheer me up. I sighed and sped up, I really just wanted to get a stupid dress and leave. As I stepped into the store I saw dozens upon dozens of beautiful dresses.
Good God, this place is like my nightmare.
