Just because you walk the modern path and have decided not to follow a patron does not mean that you can ignore the gods. You can summon gods to aid your spell work without swearing allegiance to them, but tread carefully.  There are some, like Aphrodite, who are fiercely jealous, and may not appreciate being called haphazardly.  When summoning the gods to aid your Magic, do so in a respectful, formal manner.  Gods who have, in the past, been willing to aide Witches, include: Isis, Athena, Anubis, Hermes, and Hestia.  Others may be approached, but the author cannot stress enough the fact that a patron-less Witch is in a vulnerable position when approaching the gods.  Be polite!
