She was fine sleeping on the floor as long as it was made of carpet, clean, and was given a blanket and two pillows.

But her best friend insisted anyways. "Nathan can sleep with me, right buddy?" She shook her head in disbelief as he clambered onto his brother's bed.

"Are you sure he will be okay with it?" she asked.

"C'mon, we've always done this," he replied, and nudged his little brother. "We just got this child to take care of." She heard a smack from behind her as she climbed into his bed, and pulled the car decorated blanket over her.

"I'm not a child," Nathan pouted in the most childish way possible. "I'm a man."

"Go to sleep, child," his older brother answered, shoving him down and yanking the covers over him.

"No, Malik! You have to tell me a story first like mom and dad!"

"But I'm not mom or dad."

"So? You're the next person here!"

"Ask Kat."

"I apologize. I am too tired to tell one right now," she yawned.

"See? So tell me one!"

"You're so spoiled," Malik huffed, as he racked his brain for something. She turned to look at them both through the bright lamp, as the smell of someone young engulfed her completely, waiting.

After a moment, he said, "I got nothing either," disappointing both of them. She tried to hide it with a soft chuckle.

"It is getting late. I can tell you a story tomorrow, Nathan, how about that?" she offered. He rolled over and nodded.

"See, this is why I like her more."

He gasped, pretending to be hurt. "Excuse me? Boi, you better get your ass to sleep before I call mom."

She laughed, as Nathan rolled over pulled the covers over him. "Lights out," her best friend declared, reaching over to the little chain and tugging at it. Immediately, darkness covered every single part of the room and she shifted into a comfortable position, staring at the boys' backs.

. . .

Going to sleep was harder than she had imagined on this night. She kept tossing and turning, and tried everything she could think of to get her brain to shut off. But it was futile. Nothing worked. Finally, she sat up in bed, threw back the blanket, and tried to step lightly onto the wooden floor.

The boys snored quietly, and she did her best not to wake them, as she made her way to their window, and pulled open the curtains.

The moonlight spilled in, illuminating Nathan's sprawled out position on his brother's bed. One leg was on top while both his arms were completely parallel to the headboard, and he took up the middle.

It was quite hilarious but she managed to hold in a snicker as to not wake them up. She tiptoed over to them and gently lifted his legs and arms off of Malik, and pulled the covers over him.

Then, she sat in the window seat while leaning against the right side of the window, staring out into the stars.

She didn't necessarily like these nights, because there could be school in the morning. But there were other times where she could stare at the faint sparkles in the distance silently, alone.

This night wasn't any different. And so she stared out into the sky. The silence comforted her as she let her mind wander around, which helped keep boredom away. She drifted in and out of dreams and thoughts for what seemed like hours. She shifted from seeing the blurry shimmers in the night sky to the colorful field of flowers inside her dreams. The peaceful silence and the soft seat relieved her of any academic stress and allowed her to think about the state of the world.
