Kat
. . .
Another couple of months passed, their days filled with training and learning how to control their powers. Mostly her and Nick. Malik just sat and watched, and every time she tried to do anything more complex than a spear, it always flickered out or melted. And it was embarrassing. For some reason, she kept feeling like she needed to prove to him that she could handle herself.
"That's all for today! We'll come back to this tomorrow," her uncle Zane said cheerfully. He whistled as he left the deck, and shut the door behind him, leaving both her and Nick lying on the floor.
An exhausted silence fell over them, and she noticed him breathing much harder than her. It was strange. She knew she was frailer than him, but he seemed to be suffering more than her. Not that she was complaining. Maybe it was his Element.
His head turned towards her. "What do you wanna eat?" he mumbled.
"Hm?" She looked at him as well. Beads of sweat rolled down from his forehead. There was never really much of an 'I forgive you,' but gradually, they began talking again.
"Your mom asked me to make dinner for the three of us."
"Ramen." Still, she kept the red sash with her. It wasn't too big, and she could easily crumple it up and stuff it into her pockets. Besides, it might come in handy later.
"That's it?"
"With an entire bakery for dessert."
He sighed, shaking his head and sat up, running his hand through his hair. "I'll get going then."
"Wait." She got up with him. "I want to try something."
"Why do I have a bad feeling about this?"
"Oh hush." She reached and opened the door to the hallway below. "I just want cupcakes."
"Don't eat it before dinner."
"I do what I want." She reached for the handle of the refrigerator and opened it.
"The kitchen is my territory and I'm locking the fridge if you do that."
Huffing, she shut it and leaned on the counter, pouting a little. He was almost like a second set of parents. Except with three times the sass.
The cabinet door opened and he grabbed three cups of ramen, glanced at her, then took out a fourth. "You need to eat more."
"Why?"
"You need to get stronger. And if you don't eat enough then you'll get sick. You can't save the world if you're sick."
"Who said I wanted to save the world?"
"I said."
She snorted and sat down on top of the counter. "Why do you want to do it?"
"The glory. I wanna be a hero. I want fame and to go down in history."
"That is kind of shallow."
"At least I wanna save it. I know very well you don't wanna. For your own selfish reasons."
She kicked him in the back of his legs. He stumbled. "Hey!"
"That is what you get."
"You don't wanna save anyone, do you?"
"I want to save our family and friends. If you do not want to, then feel free to perish."
"Oh please, I bet you can't even lift a sack of rice."
"I can!" She kicked him again, emitting an "Ow!" from him, and jumped down from the counter. "You know what? Let me make my ramen!" Her hands grabbed at her two cups but he pushed them away from her and leaned on the table, blocking it. She tried to get around him.
