"Akari?" Her footsteps echoed as she approached the lone figure by the window through the darkness. Her hands went up quickly at the sound of her voice as she tried to wipe away her tears from her eyes and turn back to stare out the window.
After everything that had happened she wasn't surprised to find her crying like this. They had been flanked by reporters all day asking about them, the warehouse, the 'animals' that had wreaked havoc in the streets and whatever was at the other end that the people couldn't see.
She did her best to keep Akari away from them knowing what she might have seen before she got back. They were all overwhelming and her warehouse was in ruins. But keeping up an image was important. No one had known what an Elemental was or the huge networks of warehouses and camps that reached every corner of the Earth were. This would be the first time everything would be put up on full display for the world. And it would be the world who would judge.
On top of that the people who had literally dropped down from the sky were none other than the Heirs and Heiresses themselves. Well, one Heiress. And the boy who helped her out was the Heir of Fire. He was kind enough to take away some of the reporters that flanked her and clearly, he was the better speaker. While she did everything she could to keep up their image, the cleaning up and repairing, taking care of the wounded and the dead, and figuring out what to do with the traumatized children, proved to be more than she could handle. Her vague and half-assed answers might have plunged her home and the world into further confusion.
At least the boy helped her cover her. He was more clear-headed, more formal and knew how to talk to them. On tv, he looked better as well, with his sharp eyes, jawline, hair on point and glasses, he was able to handle almost every reporter and news station that had come flocking to him. But his warehouse wasn't attacked.
She quickened her pace and knelt down next to her. The girl turned away from her and crossed her arms. "Don't look at me."
She scooted closer, reaching out for her shoulder. "Akari." Her fingertips brushed her, surprising her when she didn't shrug her away. "Let me look at you." She tried to speak as softly as she could, trying to match the voice Hiroto used whenever she was upset.
Akari sniffed, but didn't look at her."Sweetie?"
Her fingers only dug deeper into her arms.
"Do you want me to talk about something?" She tried. Maybe taking her mind off of him was something she needed. "Anything you wanna ask?"
She took her hands off her arms and furiously wiped away her tears. Then wiped away some more, and nodded.
"What do you wanna know? The reporters? The children?"
She inhaled trying to steady her voice. "I wanna know who those people were. The boy with the brown skin and the glasses." It was nasally and small, like that of a child who had just stopped crying.
"That guy?" She wondered what could be doing now. "Well, what do you think of him?"
"He looks like some hot dude from an anime."
She stifled a laugh. It was too early for one, and she had just stopped crying. "Well, I've never seen him like that before and now that you mention it, I can't unsee it."
"Who is he? Who are they?"
"He told me to call him Jack, and that he had come here in search of someone important." Her voice trailed off as she remembered that conversation. The initial shock still hadn't worn out. "Have you been reading those books in the library?"
Immediately, her lips started trembling and she knew that she had to stop the tears from coming again. "Hiroto used to-"
