Chapter 1
The (Not So) Perfect Pet
" Your related to this guy, right?" Cass asked looking at a poster of a criminal who had just escaped from Azkaban.
" All pureblood families are related somehow, Cass." I told her looking over the list of school supplies with a frown; we each agreed that we would help each get our supplies for the school year. Spencer was in charge of the books, I handled the incredibly long lists and money we used since I had my mum's share of her family fortune to work with, plus the money I had inherited from my father; I was smart enough never to question this because my mum didn't like talking about him all that much, and it was probably not earned honorably in anyway. Cass handled the miscellaneous items like quills and parchment, leaving Jackie to grab our new robes when thy were ready to be picked up.
We were going into our third year. " Really? Ew." She muttered and I let out a sigh before closing the list. " Some families, like on my mum's side, refused to marry anyone who wasn't a pureblood, or a blood traitor."
" Blood traitor?"
" Yeah. It's a stupid term." I muttered.
" Hey, come look at this." Jackie called out from further down the street, she was standing in front of a pet store. " Why do I get the feeling that I'm not going to like this?" Cass asked as we joined her at the window to find the ugliest cat I had ever seen. It had no fur, large eyes and ears to match; to be honest it looked more like rat then a cat. " I want him." Jackie said with a grin and I shared a look with Cass. " You've got to be joking." Cass said.
Several minutes later, Jackie came out of the store carrying a small cat carrier. " what are you even going to call that thing?" Cass asked.
" Theodore." She responded smiling at the cat, just as Spencer walked over to us carrying several books. He took one look at the cat and said. " Careful, Persephone might think it's rat."
" Is this everything?" Jackie asked giving Spencer a look. I crossed off the books on our lists. " Yep." I muttered before folding them up and shoving them in my pocket. " Any idea who our Defense Against the dark Arts teacher is this year?" Jackie asked as we started back toward the Leaky Cauldron.
" Nope, but I hope they're better then last year, and we actually learn something." I responded.
When we reached the Leaky Cauldron, we found a very familiar group inside; the Weasleys, Hermione Granger, and Harry Potter. " Emrys." The youngest Weasley, Ginny cried, having seen me first. She ran over to hug me and I stumbled as she nearly knocked me over. She pulled away with a grin and I looked toward Harry, who nodded at me in greeting. We hadn't spoken since last year when he had found out who I was. The two of us were putting off what was going to be a difficult discussion, so we had been avoiding each other.
Ginny went back to her family and I followed my friends toward where my mum sat alone in the corner. She was watching Harry with a curious look on her face, though it was hard to tell if it was curiosity since she had the hood of her cloak up to hide her face. " Your staring." I told her sitting down across from her, while my friends sat down on either of us, and she smiled. " Does he know, Emrys?" My mother asked I shared a look with my friends before nodding.
" Would you thank him for me?" She asked and I glanced toward Harry.
" Thank him?" Jackie questioned.
" It's a long story, child. A very sad and dark story that has yet to have an ending."
" Maybe one day." I muttered and my friends stared at me in confusion before we all looked down as Theodore made a noise of pure annoyance at wanting to be let out of his carrier.
My mum let out a sigh before she stood up and walked around the table, to hug me. " Good luck, my darling. Do try to enjoy your third year." She told me before bidding the four us good bye, and disappearing where she stood with a 'pop'.
