"Steven, do you realize the amount of intel this terrorist had on us? How could you give yourself the luxury of losing to a Hydra agent? You are one of the top agents in the agency but I'm starting to wonder what will happen to us if we are led by agents who make such careless mistakes..." Agent Sarah's beautiful eyes were narrowed in a deadly glare as she lectured Steve.

Steve's eyes fell shut as he stifled an eye roll. "Are you even listening to me Steven!" Sarah slammed her hand against the mahogany table. Steve snapped his eyes up to hers. "Do you understand what position your failure has put us in?"

Steve sighed. "This is your fault," he rebutted.

Sarah was taken aback by his bold statement, "How?"

"I only failed the mission because there was a hydra agent there. I was assured, by you, that there would be no other agents on the field but me. I approached the mission with this mind set."

Sarah pursed her lip, unimpressed by his words, "The number one characteristic an agent is supposed to have is being able to think quickly. Things never go our way, but we must over come all imprecisions!"

"Did you want me to break cover and go after him?" he challenged. "Do you want your only son shot?"

The head of S.H.I.E.L.D was no other that Sarah Rogers, his mother. She crossed her arms over her chest. "It wouldn't be the first time!" she replied bitterly.

"Mother how many times do I have to say I'm sorry!" Steve sighed. He took a bullet for Bucky once and his mother still hadn't forgiven him for endangering his life that way. "Besides I was able to identify the terrorists hidden in the crowd. I took down most of them and put trackers on others. We found their base and arrested everyone, isn't that enough?"

"Still going on about that dear?" Joseph Rogers leisurely strolled into her office and took a seat on the sofa. "My meeting went well."

Sarah sighed and sat in her chair, completely ignoring her husband. "Very well Steve. Regarding other matters, how is your relationship with Sharon Carter going?"

"Nowhere," Steve replied curtly.

Sarah frowned, "You do know that you're both going to marry?"

"I will not marry Sharon."

"The boy is right," Joseph interjected, "They are not compatible." Sarah's eyes slanted into a fearsome glare. He fidgeted in his seat uncomfortably, "But maybe you should give her a chance."

"Yeah, that's not happening."

"You're already 35! Who are you planning to Marry?"

Steve parted his lips, but he couldn't bring himself to answer. How did one tell their mother that he was in love with her arch enemy? There was absolutely no way that she would be ok with it. She took his silence as uncertainty, "See! Sharon is very sweet. Please just give her a chance. She's very interested in you."

"What's the point of marrying and settling down when I know that every mission I go to might be my last?" Steve met eyes with his mother. Sarah huffed but she didn't have an answer for him. He stood up, "I'm sorry for messing up on the mission. I'll see you two at dinner tonight ok?" With that he stepped out of the office.

Steve walked around shield HQ pointlessly, looking for even the tiniest activity to capture his attention. Bucky had left to go on a mission a couple of weeks ago, and all his friends had managed to be sent on missions at the same time. Spending time with his normal friends was not even an option. As the only elite agent left in the company, he had to stay in case something went haywire.

He sighed dejectedly. This was his mother's revenge he supposed. Leaving him in a state of complete boredom. There were only so many shows and movies you could binge watch before you felt like flinging yourself out a window.

"Steve?" A voice purred through his ear piece.

"Listening," he responded.

"Can you make your way to briefing room A?" The voice said. He recognized it as Helena's, a quiet girl who worked under his mother. "We have a mission for you."

"I'll be right there," Steve quickly shuffled to the said room, trying his best to repress a smile when he saw his mother sitting in it.

She sent him a tight smile then redirected her attention to the screen in the middle of the room. "Hi Steve!" Helena pushed a small button on the walls. The clear windows around them turned black, securing the room from any potential eavesdropper.

"One of our agents' cover was broken during a mission. He was sent to infiltrate a gang in Chicago with close ties to what we believe to be a terrorist group. Before he was captured, he left all the data he collected in a flash drive inside a vending machine in Lumere Corp."

"Is he ok?" Steve asked worriedly, recognizing the image on the screen as Jim.

"Yes, we sent all our top agents to extract him. They are on their way back with him. The problem is that Hydra has caught sight of this and are currently moving to obtain it. It is rightfully ours, so we can't let them have it, especially when agent Jim almost lost his life obtaining it."

"Why are you sending me?" Steve inquired. With no other S rank agent in the company they wouldn't send him on a mission unless it was crucial. Any other agent could have done this one.

"Because they are sending a S rank agent to retrieve it." His mother said. "I have come here to personally tell you that we can absolutely, under no circumstance, let hydra get it." Sarah's voice held an edge of seriousness Steve rarely heard in it.

"Why? What's on there?"

"A little evidence on our efforts to sabotage Hydra's missions," Helena said sheepishly. "You do understand how bad it'll be for us if it went up to the Avengers?"

Steve run his hand over his face. This was a big deal. If hydra decided to report this evidence shield would be under constant surveillance. His mother would lose her job and it would start an investigation on all past sabotage attempts. If hydra decided to not report it, they would have heavy leverage over them and could black mail them into doing pretty much anything they wanted. "Why is that info even on there?"

"Agent Jim copied the info right after he got discovered. The only thing he had on him was the drive containing the details of his previous mission. Which was one of sabotage, approved by your mother. He didn't have time to come back and dispose of it, so he was forced to keep it on his person."

Steve groaned, "This feud is more trouble than it's worth!" Steve couldn't even imagine the things Hydra would do to them if they had that kind of leverage. "What a stupid situation to find ourselves in."

"I know, just leave already!" Sarah said. "You're taking private jet 145. Be careful."

"Got it mother. Don't worry I won't fail this one."
