I can see him watching us from the living room, he is trying to be discreet but failing miserably. I'm in the kitchen with Lauren and Joe making cookies for Jackson's school bake sale, they are fundraising for their basketball team. I have been getting a lot of looks from David recently, I feel like he's been keeping a close watch on me and I'm not sure why. I get along great with his kids now, it was sort of a bumpy start. Lauren took to me quickly, but she is only six. Joe took a little longer, but when he figured out I was just there to help his dad and be an extra set of hands in the house he seemed to be okay with me. I think he started to like me on the sole basis that I let him play is xbox more than he was probably allowed, but I told him he could if he would speak to me only in French. I was told when I got the job that the kids needed to be speaking some French at home, their mother was from France and it was important to David to make sure his kids could speak the language even though their mother was no longer with them. She had passed away a few years back in an accident he wasn't willing to tell me about. But little did I know that little devil was in French immersion and was basically fluent in the language. None the less, it was a way to win him over. Jackson on the the other hand took a while. He is David's nephew that he has taken in, and from what I believe it's pretty recent, also another story David hasn't wanted to share. And that's fair, I'm just the nanny/tutor he hired six weeks ago. But I finally turned Jackson around when I helped him with his game in basketball. I was a player in university, which surprised him, but he went from a eighth man to a starter that played almost forty minutes.
Lauren takes the hand held mixer into the dry ingredients and before I could say anything she turned it on and everything went everywhere. I ran over and turned it off and she looked at me like she might get in trouble but I laughed so hard because she looked ridiculous. She was covered in the mixture, I was too a bit and Joe had some on him even though he was across the kitchen. When Lauren and Joe started laughing David came in and said, "what's all the commotion about?" with a slight amused smile on his face.
"We made a bit of a mess, but don't worry, I'll clean it up." I said, a little guarded, thinking he would get a little mad, but he didn't. Instead he grabbed a small handful from the bowl and was walking over to Joe, who realized what he was doing and started to run for me to hide behind me. This was the first time I have seen David interact with his kids in a goofy and fun way since I have been here.
"Oh no you don't, Ashley can't save you now." As he moved towards me with a coy look in his eye.
"Dad no!" Joe shrieked from behind me.
"Come on guys!" I said as I grabbed Lauren off the chair and Joe quickly followed me to the other side of the island. David then threw the flour mixture and got Joe right in the back of the head.
"AH!" Joe said as he ran over to the sink and grabbed the hose from the side and aimed it at his dad.
"Don't even think about it Joe." David said in a serious tone, but before he could say anything else Joe got him, I reached over the island and grabbed the bowl and Lauren grabbed some and threw it on her dad. It stuck to every part the water got him.
"Three on one I see. Game on." He said he made his way over to me and I told Lauren to go and stand with her brother and I would block her dad. He came over to my side of the island and Joe sprayed water at his dad but he grabbed me and used me as a shield. Like father like son I though. He came up behind me and grabbed my arms hugging me closely to him. I felt butterflies in my stomach immediately. He ran one of his hands down my arms and I felt like jello. He was extremely handsome, way out of my league, and after a couple seconds he quickly let go of me as he picked up the bag of flour. He sort of looked at me funny, like he knew he was being too intimate and maybe he felt something too. He went back around the island, stuck his hand right in the flour bag and started throwing it in each direction aiming for the kids and myself. I couldn't help but laugh as the kids were having so much fun with their dad. After a minute or so, Joe had accidentally hit me in the face with the water and David threw some flour my way and well, I ended up calling a truce when it was in my eye and I couldn't see anything.
"Oh my god Ashley, are you alright, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to get you like that." He said so quickly.
"Come here, sit down." He grabbed my arm, it send a spark down to my fingertips, weird. He guided me to a chair in the kitchen and put his hand on my face, I assume to examine my eye. But it felt more intimate than that. I liked it a little too much.
"Joe, could you please put some water in a bowl and bring me a towel." I tried to open my eye, but when I did it hurt so badly, my hand immediately went to it and I heard him grunt in annoyance. I felt bad, here I am supposed to be helping his kids and keep this place in order and I'm just an inconvenience now.
"Don't try and open your eyes, just wait till I tell you to." He said sort of rudely. But he had a gently hand on mine while he waited for his son to bring him what he needed.
"Okay, I'm going to clean up around your face, let me know if I'm hurting you. Okay?"
"Okay." Is all I could say. I was having some weird feelings right now. And by weird, I mean I have feelings for David but I have been amendment on hiding them because I can't get attached and he can't get attached to me. It's too dangerous. But I felt it very intimate the way he was taking care of me. He could have just guided me to the sink and told me to rinse my eyes, which probably would have been easier. He also held onto me for longer than necessary during the flour fight, not like I'm complaining but now I just assume he is doings this because he feels bad, or maybe he feels the same way about me? Uhg, there's no way. I haven't given him any reason to. And I've seen pictures of his wife, and I am definitely not his type.
"Alright, I think I got it all, try opening your eyes." I didn't want to. I didn't want this feeling to end, even if it was just all in my head. As I open my eyes, I see David's. He is so close to me it startled me a bit and he moved away a bit.
"Umm, thank you." I say shyly and I stand up. He stands up with me, closely to me, and doesn't move. He looks into my eyes for a little longer than I am comfortable with, I can see fire in there but it fades fast. He backs up and looks around at the mess.
"I'll clean it up, don't worry. And I'll have the baking done for Jackson by tomorrow, promise." He looks a little confused then I think he brings himself back to reality,
"Right, yes. Thank you. Lauren and Joe, go get cleaned up, we are going to your grandparents for dinner tonight." He gives me one last look and leaves. I'm so confused and that probably means I should leave but I think I'm in too deep, I don't think I'm strong enough to go.
