Lex
Dad taught me how to drive, which I got better at, so I could ask Piper out properly. Even though we were engaged, I wanted to do this right.
At the bakery, Piper and I would talk and give each other looks. Neither of us could stop smiling, knowing how we enjoyed being in each other's company.
We were working on order when I said, "I thought that we could go on a date."
She dropped her bowl of dry ingredients onto the floor. I looked at her as she looked at me, shocked.
"Or not," I said as I went to grab a broom and dustpan to clean up the mess.
"I would like that," she blurted as I stopped and looked at her. "It's that I've been waiting for you to ask me out and well, with you not remembering me. I didn't know how long I would wait."
I walked over and started sweeping up the mess. "I know, and I'm sorry."
She picked up the bowl and utensil, while I swept up the mess into a pile. Then I used the dustpan to scoop up the mess, dumping it into the trash can. Once I finished, I put both away and walked towards her.
She looked at me with hope. I reached up and moved a strand of hair away from her face.
"I know it's hard on everyone, and I know it has been especially hard on you. I wish I could remember the life we had before the accident but I can't. What I can do at this point is to try again and hope we can make new memories. That's if you want to?" I suggested to her.
"I would like nothing more than that," she smiled sweetly at me. A smile curled on my lips as I looked at her. Piper was beautiful, but her smile made her breathtaking. Her eyes lit up, and so did her face when she smiled. I could never get enough of it.
"Good, then how about this Friday night?" I asked her.
"I would like that," she said.
I pulled my hand back, and we finished the order we were preparing. I had to admit I was excited about Friday now.
Friday came, and I got ready for my date with Piper. My parents helped with a few items, like clothes, flowers, and planning them.
I finished getting ready, grabbing the flowers and car keys before leaving. I drove over to her house, pulling up in front of it. After getting out of the car, I held the flowers in my hand. I walked up to her door and knocked. She answered a few minutes later.
I handed her the flowers, and she took them from me. I watched her inhale the scent as I smiled. She set them down, then came out of her house, closing the door behind her.
We walked to the car, and I opened the car door for her. Once she was inside the car, I closed the door and went to the driver's side. I got inside and pulled away from the front of her house, driving us to a restaurant.
We arrive and park, then exited the car, walking to the entrance. Entering the restaurant, I gave them my name, and the hostess seated us at a table.
A few minutes later, a waitress brought us menus. We scanned through it before placing our orders. Once the waitress took our order, she left, and we sat there, talking.
Piper told me things that we had done and how I was so shy with her. I had been in love with her long before we had gotten together. She told me some crazy things we got involved with because of my sisters.
I can't believe how much we had been through together. I guess what people say is true; even if your mind doesn't remember, your heart does.
We finished dinner and left the restaurant. I drove us to a park. We got out and started walking towards the boardwalk. I reached down and gently brushed her hand with mine until I felt her take my hand.
I looked down to see our hands interlocked with each other, then back at her as she was smiling. That felt right.
We walked towards the boardwalk until we reached it, then along the water. The park wasn't busy, and the weather was decent. It was mid-October, which meant Halloween was approaching.
"It feels weird," I said as she looked at me.
"What does?" She asked me.
"It feels like so much happened in a short time," I sighed.
"Because it did. Lex, we can't go back and change what happened. All we can do is move forward. I'm just glad we can," she said somberly.
I stopped, and she did too. She turned and looked at me.
"What?" She asked, looking confused.
I pulled her to me and reached up, gently touching her face. She moved her face into my hand. Her skin was so soft and tender. I rubbed her cheek with my thumb as she placed her hand on top of mine. Leaning in, I gently pressed my lips to hers, capturing them with mine.
She didn't hesitate to kiss me back. The kiss was sweet and gentle. I moved my hand from her face, wrapping my arms around her back. She reached up, wrapping her arms around my neck. We stood there and kissed as people passed us. I didn't care if they stared. All I wanted to do was hold Piper in my arms.
They had taken much from us, and for once, we could find our way back to each other. It was at that moment; I didn't want to take her or what we had for granted. Most people do not realize in the blink of an eye; they can lose everything.
We finished kissing and got some ice cream. It was fitting, considering it was a simple date but meant everything to both of us. We walked along the river as we enjoyed our ice cream cones.
"Okay, I'll admit you were right," I said as I licked my ice cream.
"I told you Superman ice cream is the bomb," she smirked as she licked her ice cream.
"Did we argue about ice cream a lot?" I questioned her.
"Yes, we did. It didn't matter because we always ended up with the same thing, Superman ice cream," she answered with a cheesy grin as I chuckled.
That was the thing about Piper, being with her wasn't difficult. It was easy. I think that was what I liked the most about her. I had a feeling; she would be the one to help me the most when I needed it. I didn't know it yet.
