Lex
Today we were finding out what we were having. Neither of us wanted to wait to know the sex of the baby. I know people prefer a surprise, but after what we went through, I didn't want any surprises.
We waited in the waiting room of the doctor's office until a nurse called us back. I followed Piper to an examining room and helped her up on the table. A few minutes later, the doctor came in and checked her out, making sure everything was fine. It was.
The doctor brought over an ultrasound machine as she laid down. He lifted her top and put some clear gel on her stomach. She winced because it was cold. Then he took a wand, placing it on her stomach, turning on the machine. He moved it around, then we heard it, a heartbeat.
Both of us looked at the screen to see the baby moving around. The doctor took some captures of the baby as he pushed the wand around, then turned to us. "Would you like to know what you're having?"
"Yes," we both said as he chuckled. He moved it around as I looked closely at the screen.
"Is that what I think it is?" I asked him.
He smiled. "Congratulations, Mom and Dad, you're having a boy."
I stood there as my jaw dropped and looked at the monitor in amazement. I have a son. I reached up and placed my hand on the screen.
"We have a son," I replied quietly. I stood in awe as I turned and looked at Piper, who smiled. Most people wouldn't understand, but having a Gray boy was a big deal with us.
The doctor prints out the picture, then placing it in an envelope as he handed it to us. Piper fixes her clothes as I helped her down off the table. We left the doctor's office and drove to the bakery.
Once we pulled into the parking lot, both of us got out, making our way inside to only to find our family waiting for us.
"Well," Dad asked us as they all waited with anticipation.
"We're having a boy," I announced as they all cheered. Everyone hugged us.
Then Grammy spoke, "It's funny when I had the boys. I had always prayed for a girl."
"Thanks a lot, Ma!" Grampa and his brothers exclaimed while everyone laughed.
"You twits didn't let me finish, now hush. As I was saying, while I had wished for a girl, I was happy with the boys." We all looked at her. "Boys can challenge and drive you nuts, but there's something special about them. I remember when Gray held Nathaniel for the first time along with Jonas and Cayson, he was over the moon. While he and the boys may have clashed as they got older, he loved them more than anything."
We stood there as she recounted how granddad felt being a father.
"Sometimes a father and a son butt head because they are a lot alike, but the one thing no one can ever deny is how much they love their sons. Isn't that true, boys?" She asked Grampa and my uncles.
"It's true," they agreed.
"The best days in my life besides the day I married Pat was when we had the boys, all of them," Grampa told us.
"Same with us," Jonas added as Cayson nodded in agreement.
"It was the same with us," Dad agreed as he gestured to my uncles who nodded. "While your sisters are special to me, so are you," he told me.
That was the thing about our family; no matter what happened, nothing mattered more than family. I looked at Piper, who looked at me. I placed my hand on her stomach as I felt a kick. I knew at some point; we need to give the baby a name. It's deciding what we wanted to name him.
After a while, we left and went home. Piper was a little tired, and I couldn't blame her. It had been a long day. Since we ate at the bakery, I was good at relaxing.
I sat on the couch, flipping through a book of names and nothing was catching my eye. Piper waddled in and sat down next to me, laying her head on my shoulder.
"Any luck?" She asked me.
"Not really," I sighed as she took the book from me. Then she flipped through it until she came to a name. I like this one.
I looked at it, "Payton?" I looked at her questionably.
"It's different, plus it doesn't start with an L," she smirked as I chuckled, rolling my eyes.
"Why do I think there is a theme with any child we have?" I inquired.
"Think about it, your grandmother's name starts with a P," she reasoned with a look until I realized Grammy's name started with an L. Now it all made sense.
"Let me guess; you will give the kid someone's name as their middle name?" I questioned. Piper looked around, acting innocent, who was far from innocent.
There was no use in arguing as we decided on what to name the baby. Someone was in for a surprise when they found out.
A month later, Lyric and Micheal found out they were having a boy. They named him Matthew Michael. According to Lyric, one was enough. Leave it to my sister to make a big deal about having one. She should be happy since Ma had five of us.
Even Michael was good with one. He told me that Lyric wasn't so sweet pregnant. She was worse than Lakin in temperament. That's a scary thought.
It didn't matter to me; I couldn't wait to meet our boy. Let's hope the crazy gene skips him. I don't want to deal with that, considering what I had to put up with my sisters while growing up. Dad told me good luck since all the Grays were nuts. That's reassuring, I guess we will wait and see.
