“The last time I saw them, they were at Kallang River” I replied. He kept his eyes on the road. I could not stop staring at him. His hair was tousled and I had an urge to smooth it back into place. I had not realized how much he had meant to me till that moment. “It’s rude to stare” He commented. I snorted at that. “You are one to talk when you have been doing that a lot”. He turned his head and smiled at me. My heart lifted as I realized that he was really safe and alive. I felt tears of joy filling my eyes.

“Hey, hey” He pulled the car over, and pulled me into his warm arms. I pressed my face into his neck, smelling that familiar smell. “I am okay” He whispered, stroking a hand down my back in comfort. I swallowed the tears and leaned back to look at him. He bent down and brushed his lips softly against mine, then sunk in. He tasted like almonds and it felt so good. Warmth spread through me and I wrapped my arms around his neck, sunk my hands into his soft hair. The heat grew hot, intense and we started to go crazy, wanting more of each other. He hands slipped under my shirt, his fingers lightly fingering my stomach, sending a tingling feeling through me.

Just than my phone started ringing, and we jerked away from each other, breathlessly. We stared at each other a moment, wanting to continue and knowing that we had to stop. His lips turned up at the corners. “You should answer that.” I picked up the phone and moved back to my seat properly, trying to calm my nerves that had been thrown out of balance. I cleared my throat and pressed to receive the call “Hello?”

Nuru told me that were inside the National Stadium and they had planned to camp there for the night. Blake started to drive there. “How old are you?” I asked curiously. He tilted his head to the side and gazed into my eyes. “Suddenly curious, aren’t we?” he teased. Embarrassed, I could not meet his eyes and stared out of the glass. He brushed his knuckles softly across my cheek. “26.” he answered. That made him three years older than me, I liked that. I tried to hide the fact that I was pleased by not facing him but I could tell that he was smiling and he held my hand with his free hand for the rest of the trip back.

Tired from the day’s events, we sat in a circle in the middle of the stadium, on the soft grass. Teck Huat was recounting a story about his life and how he once was involved in a rebellion, probably reminded of it by how I insisted on going back for Blake. I leaned against Blake’s shoulder as we listened to the story and everyone laughed. Safe and contented, I fell into a deeper sleep than I had since the start of the zombie invasion.

Living at the stadium was an interesting experience. We could not stay in the field all the time, especially under the hot afternoon sun. It was huge and I would often find myself sitting in the spectator seats thinking of how it would be like to be an audience of a huge event. Funny how in the past I hated watching football, but now all I could think of was how it would be like if life could back to normal and football could resume with their matches.

I also spent a lot more time instead Blake instead of seeking solace. We would walk around the stadium holding hands or running errands together. He was funny and protective and a really good kisser. We actually played baseball with the whole group after finding baseball gear in the store room. Blake helped me to fix my position to swing the bat by putting his arms around me. His sister often like to tease us by calling us “Lovebirds” despite our efforts to keep our relationship discreet and not making out in front of the group. I guessed that love was a feeling of comfort and acceptance. I was beginning to feel that it did not matter where I was, just as long as I was closed to Blake. Home is where the heart lies. Unfortunately, our happiness was to be short lived.
