Sentosa, the paradise of sun, sand and sea. Blake’s little sister, Joan really wanted to visit. She mentioned that since it was an island on its own, it should have been relatively isolated. I did not have the heart to point out to her that many people headed to Sentosa on the weekends, meaning infected people could have gotten in. She continued to nag Blake for days.
“Nothing is operating!” Blake tried to dissuade his sister. “I am pretty sure the SEA aquarium has not collapsed and flooded the place!”, his sister argued back in a pointless attempt to convince her brother to take her. In a desperate attempt, she insulted him, “You were never any fun, Blake! All you did was work, work till you had nobody, worked till no one ever saw you!” It worked because Blake looked at her uneasily and guiltily. He glanced my way to catch me watching their conversation and I quickly walked away, pretending to have not heard anything.
That night, while I was walking back to the sleeping area, which used to be locker rooms, someone grabbed me by the waist suddenly and my heart started to pound. I was prepared to fight the zombie when it kissed my neck. “I thought you were a zombie for a moment! Don’t do that at night! ” Blake chuckled as I tried to pull out of his arms. He turned me around and wrapped his arms around me tight. After struggling for a moment, I gave up my indignity, reaching up to his collar to play with it.
“I was thinking of bringing my sister to Sentosa…” He began. I sighed knowing where this was going. It was not a safe place to go and he did not want me to come along. He was guilty because he used to be very close to his sister until he got into medical school and stopped being there for her. His parents were bankers and from what he had told me before, they were never around for him or his sister.
I slid my hands to link them around his neck and hugged him tight. “If you go, I go”. He ran a hand through in his hair in frustration, not wanting to argue and agreeing. As it turns out, Russell was very keen on going too. Nuru and Jonathan had to stay behind to take care of the group.
We drove past the scenic view of the sea, and stopped at entrance gate that had been closed. Joan hopped out of the car and hacked the gates system within seconds. “Wow” I commented. Blake laughed and Russell rolled his eyes. “She’s our resident hacker and the one who taught all of us how to hack. I learned some of it from her before all this started.” Blake explained. So, she was the one I had to approach to learn to hack.
After driving through the gates that closed behind us, Joan wanted to visit Siloso beach first. We drove around, surprised at how empty the entire place looked. Even more surprising was that we did not spot any zombies. We sat on the beautiful sand of the beach while we watch Joan amuse herself by playing with water and even “borrowing” bicycles to cycle.
We decided to join in the fun and took a two-seater bicycle to cycle together. I wrapped my arms around Blake and hugged him tight from behind. “You are supposed to hold the handles, you know.” I smiled into his warm back covered by a grey polo T shirt today. “I prefer this”, I commented. “Me too. It would be nice if you could do some pedalling too though. I am tired”. I laughed and stood up a bit to kiss his neck. “Thank you”. Just then, we heard a scream from Joan who was cycling ahead of us.
She turned around and cycled quickly back. “Zombies!” She warned. We were near Resort World so I guessed the zombies were probably guests that had got infected but continued to stay at their hotels. We cycled as fast as we could to the car, a reasonably safe distance ahead from the zombies. As we got into the car though, I noticed a distressingly familiar zombie.
