It was six am when I was standing by the carved doors looking out over the canopy of trees. It was still quite dark but I could see the faint outline of the sun peeking over the cliff letting light into the valley. Ten minutes prior to this I was sneeking though the castle trying to find what I needed. I found a couple of ropes tucked beneath a pile of sheets in the wash room, that i tied together. And a bunch of metal pegs in what I'm assuming was the weapons room. I rummaged through the boxes in there and decided to take a small blade with me. Now im standing on the edge of the cliff.
I kneeled down and stabbed the peg in to the ground as hard as I could. Taking the rope, I tied a knot around the peg and pulled tightly. Making sure it's secure I slowly lowered myself over the cliff. I edged my way down past the rocky surfaces, gripping the rock with my feet. "Don't look down Ellie" I whispered to myself. Taking a deep breath I sprung my feet off the cliff face and slid down the rope. The wind whipped my face and blew my hair vertically above my head. My feet came in to contact with the wall again and I shuffled down and landed with a thump on the cool grass. Picking myself up I brushed the dirt from my pants.
I gazed around the trees and decided to head towards the sound of running water. Stepping over a fallen log I brushed leaves out my face. Making my way past the trees I traveled further away from the castle. I came to a small stream of water running along the ground. I decided to followed it. After about ten minutes of walking I came to a clearing. The stream of water widened out in to a pond, trees circled the pond and birds flew across my vision and landed on the glistening water. Glancing at my watch 7.00am. I decided to sit down and eat breakfast. I pull out a bottle of water and a bar. The bar still tasted good to me. Not as satisfying as my first drink of blood but enough to keep me strong.
It was a lovely day. The sun was high in the sky now and the temperature was rising fast. I decided to go for a swim in the pond. It seem clean enough and a good way to keep my mind off my family.
Slowly I dipped my toes in to the cool blue water. I was waist deep when I dived under. A cool feeling ran up my spine and before I knew what was happening the water was tossing me under, deeper. Current swirled me, and flipped me upside down. I screamed and bubbles tickled my nose. I was twisting uncontrollably down, deeper. Everything started to shake. I was beginning to lose my breath and see blurring at the edges of my vision.
Something slimy wrapped around my ankles, tighter, tighter, cutting into my skin. It dragged me deeper.
Sluuurpppp..... sand ran across my body. I was being sucked into the ground.
"Ahh" I screamed
thud!
I landed in a small opening of rock beneath the sand in the bottom of the pond.
"Well you must be my undoing. Haha pretty scrawny for a hero" said a melodic voice.
click clack went the footsteps behind me.
"Pretty little thing you are, but your weak, small, hardly worth fretting over"
hands gripped my shoulders. A cold blade pressed to my neck. Cool breath tickled my cheek.
"but just to make sure"
The blade slit in in to my neck, I felt warm blood ooze down my neck. Struggling in her iron grip I flug myself forward sending her flying over the top of me smashing in to ground.
She got straight to her feet, knife in hand.
She tilted her head, flashed a smile with those red,red lips. Violet eyes stared right in to mine.
"To look your enemy in the eye straight before death is considered brave" she smirked at me.
Opening her mouth slightly, lips twitching. Two razor sharp fangs slit the tops of her gums.
She leapt at me, landing on top of me and knocking me off my feet. Sweat dripped down the sides of my temples. Her face inches away from mine.
"what do you want, please let me go" I choked out.
"Hahaha" She got off me and stood up.
"My dear child, there is not much I want from you, but your insides splattered against these rock walls"
"please" I said not knowing what to say or what was going on. "who are you?."
"I am your worse nightmare, I'm the reason you lock your doors at night. I am the reason cold makes your heart stop"
"Are you Shine?" I asked remembering Justin's story.
I was not sure how to handel this situation. I'm about to die.
My mother taught me the only way to get out of a bad situation was to try change the subject. In this case the subject I need to get away from is my last breath.
"Are you? The great and powerful vampire I have been told about?" I asked as innocently as I could without showing my fear.
"Who speaks of that name to you" she bellowed.
"My father. Christopher Crofter, or you may know him as Christopher Granger" I said not daring to get up off the ground.
"I know who your daddy is little girl, And I also know that your not very happy with him right now. So my proposal to you my dear, is if you want to keep the breath in your body for a little while longer you are going to help me. If you refuse... lets just say you will never see me again" she paused "or anything again for that matter"
She laughed a laugh that echoed around the cave long after she stopped. "So what do you say girl" she asked flashing her fangs at me.
I didn't have to think long because I knew I didn't want to die, not now. And what's the worst she could make me do?
"What do you want me to do?" I asked.
"smart girl" she smirked her fans slipping into the tops of her gums.
"Your father is an old friend of mine. You see after the war I surrendered to the sacred ones. For my short time with the clan I became quite good friends with your father. I gave him something, something special to me and id like you to get it back"
"What is it?" I replied
"A red ruby jem necklace. Hidden somewhere in the big castle. If you can find it and bring it back to me, I will let you live" she laughed again.
"Why do you want it?" I questioned.
"That is none of your concern, you should be more concerned with your puny little life that I could take just like that! Now will you get it for me? or shall I kill you? " she hissed her fans sliding out again.
"Okay. I'll get it for you. Do you have an idea when it might be?" I asked.
" You look like a smart girl, you will find it. And when you do. Just drop it in to this Lake here" and with that the ceiling opened up and a stream of water quickly began filing the cave, slowly at first and then the total roof seemed to give way. A cascade of water rushed and feel on top of me. gasping for air. I swam fully concelded in the water. Shine was nowhere to be seen. She was gone.
Faster and Faster I scrambled to the surface, heart racing. I could see the shimmering of the sun I was nearly there. I broke the surface and took a deep breath of air. Pulling myself ashore I coughed and splutted.
I dont know how long I layed there for. But before I managed to get up. I heard the pounding of feet against the earth and a dark shape bent over me.
"Shes over here!!" called a familiar voice.
"oh thank god" another shadow leaned over me.
I felt a pair of arms lift me up. I could feel the slow rocking movement of his steps. I opened my eyes and looked in to the face of Justin.
" hey" he said.
"hey" I replied.
I saw him smile. He looked up and kept walking.
