chapter one | the runaway

Her heart is slamming against her chest, her breath raging to compose itself as she runs among the crowds, tears wet cheeks and she didn't even have the time to wipe them away. Her eyes could be only kept forward, she couldn't take the chances in looking back to see how close they were. One thing she was sure of: she was starting to get tired.

For the past hour, she hasn't been able to lose them at all, much to her misfortune. She tried changing her shirt, putting her hair up into some hat, it wasn't enough, the moment their voices shouted how they saw her going in a certain direction, the chase would start again.

She was starting to not know what to do, panic fills her, looking for exits all over, people would be giving her weird looks, others shouting at her to look where she was going when she ran into them, the road was starting to come to an end and there was only the rail way ahead and after that, there were no more hideouts.

She has been running away since she was 19, after her father died and her family was wanted, but the only family she had was her father's group and her younger sibling, but along the trip of trying to find a safe place for the both of them, he got lost. From one end of the country, she was now in the other, they were trailing behind her like hunting dogs, with only one thing in mind, to have her killed and end her family line for good.

The perks of being a gang leader's daughter, though she had a safe childhood, she was kept away from all the danger for so many years, she would only be exposed to glimpses of it, but until she saw her entire family get murdered in front of her own eyes, when bullets come cutting through the air and breaking precious objects and then next thing she knows, she has bodies spread all over the floor, bathing in their own blood, one of them being her older sister and only mouthing for her to get her younger brother and run.

Amidst the buzzing of panic in her ear, her eyes widen when hearing the train horn and the bells that meant a train would be arriving and they would be closing the passage of cars soon. She realises there's now a chance for her to hide.

The railway guards are blowing the whistle for the cars to slowly come to a stop, but she ignored the sounds of it, the sidewalk she was running on soon came to its end and now she would be risking her life in running across a busy junction, where cars were running in, in order to get to the railway and were the train was coming on.

She hears their curses when watching as she ran past the honking cars who halted aggressively to stop when she ran in front of them, the train was fast approaching, the guards only then noticing her but too late as she already ran past the blocking black and yellow poles. She was still running even if she did make it past the railway but when looking back and seeing the train fully covered her view from the other side, she ran back again.

This time, running for the train, her hands stretch in front of her when seeing an open wagon, and when it came past quickly, she jumped inside. Her body rolling in and hitting the wall, earning a grunt and possibly a now new injury on the leg. She stayed in that position for a while, breathing in and out in quick, short breathers until she rolls her body until landing on her back.

Her arms spread out as her eyes were still closed while she tried so hard to regain back her oxygen, at least for the next couple of hours or possibly days, she would be safe. The female knew it wouldn't be for so long until they would catch up to her, they always do, scarily so.

When her heart calms down and her breath was back to its normal pace, her eyes open and she huffs, "now, you don't even know where you're going, Lisa..." Slowly, she sits up and looks around, she could see boxes stacked upon each other, nobody else was in the wagon but her. Lisa carefully brings herself to stand up, not really surprised when feeling a pain shoot up from her ankle and she knew she probably twisted it.
