chapter twelve | abditory

The next days at the manor were quiet, Lisa would get to spend time with Renjun all she wanted with no sign of Mark on sight which in her opinion had been... concerning. Seulgi had guaranteed her she wouldn't be hurt in any at all compared to the days in where bruises would cling to her skin no matter what, the ones in which Mark's ruthless and vicious hands would itch to hurt her for whatever sins she had to pay in sake for her father's doings ― and they would grab hold of her, the thought of them made Lisa shudder every time and tears cling to her eyelashes, holding themselves back from spilling over.

She would spend most of the time in the library that Seulgi introduced her to, in where she would quietly read away and even nap with Renjun by her side and occasionally, with the way he whined so childishly out of boredom, they would get to roam around the manor under Seulgi's observation, who toured them around and let them do whatever they wanted.

The garden however, had been the only placed in which she never foot upon, it almost seemed forbidden. That had been due to the presence Chaeyoung had. She was always in the garden, basking in the sunlight and since she spent long periods of time moving around there with Jaemin, whose eyes were set on her like an eagle and every time Lisa saw them, she knew the male had one fear. His eyes reflected the same Lisa recognised of long ago, when she herself had the moment Renjun disappeared. Lisa would never step into the garden, not when Chaeyoung had been there and not when she even wasn't, no matter how big it was and even with the way her sibling would plead for them to feel the sun.

Lisa desperately wanted to laugh miserably when he would say so, "Believe me," She wanted to say, "I am craving for the warmth on my skin, yet I can't." But she never would let it out. She is fearful of what might happen if she comes face to face with the girl whose arrival had cause everything to cease and change so suddenly. Would she be thankful? Would she be angry? Lisa didn't know why she questioned herself with the second question.

Within the manor, it had been only them: Jaemin and Chaeyoung, Seulgi, Renjun and Lisa. Nobody else. And this made the Thai female wonder why it had been so empty and quiet, why would Mark have left for so long so quickly, overnight. Yet, the girl knew that this peacefulness, the mornings in which she would awaken with her brother right by her side, his expression drawn with relief and harmony as he slept, the laughter they would share by evenings and by night we would leave the windows open, listening to the cigarras, which were the drunk from the moonlight and the heat that came, uttering their strange night of theirs that would eventually lull them to sleep ― they wouldn't last long.

And how right she was, no matter how many times she would whisper in her sleep and eventually having Renjun shake her awake to prove them wrong, Lisa would simply smile tiredly, telling to herself that everything would go back to being as horrible as it was before. And all it took was to hear screeching tires against pebbles, Lisa had been hidden within the library, but the angry cars were still heard even there. The air on her arms stood on end, almost as by some primal instinct to run away yet she knew she couldn't.

Renjun had rustled in his sleep but Lisa shook him awake, desperately so that Mark wouldn't have to take one look at them and make things worse for her. She could with the way the car was driven outside, how it was so loud, that it could easily be reflecting on Mark's raging temper. The younger boy looked at her with confused eyes, which then swirled with realisation, then worry, and finally anger. He was determined to protect his elder sister, but Lisa knew ― what could her little brother, no matter how brave and dogged he was, defend her against the tyrant that had been Mark?
