As we run, we reach a large building.
We walk in; the floor is black and white tile with a large scale symbol on the floor in black and white tile as well. Candor Headquarters.
Guards rush towards us. “Get on the ground now! Hands in the air.”
They didn’t have weapons, but I did not want to doubt the power they had. I was too exhausted to fight anyone.
We do as they say and crouch on the ground, getting to our knees.
“Give us your weapons.” They command. Myself, Tobias and Tris take the guns out of our pockets and slide them forward.
A woman in a black skirt and white dress blouse, picks them up and puts them in a bucket.
“When you leave, you can have them back.” The woman says kindly.
She notices Christina behind us. “Good to see you again Christina. How are you?”
“Oh I’m great, just being held against my will here by my old faction.” Christina smarts back. Yep. She was Candor.
”Same Christina,” The woman laughs. “Let them up. They mean us no harm.” She says to the guards.
They let us get off our knees and have a chance to properly look around.
”What are you all doing here?” She asks.
”We don’t even know who you are, and you expect us to tell you why we’re here?” Tobias asks.
”I’m Katrina Young. I help run the government along with Jack here at Candor.” Jessica smiles at us.
”Hi, I’m Tobias, this is my girlfriend, Ana,” Tobias says, pointing to me. “This is Tris, and the Peter, and Will. And we learned you know Christina already.” He laughs. Christina sticks out her tongue at him.
”Nice to meet you all,” Katrina says. “So what do we owe the pleasure of this visit?”
”Jeanine Matthews gave all of the initiates and most of the trainers a serum that made us -with the exception of Tobias and Tris- into mindless slaves under her control. And she made us kill dozens of innocent Abnegation people.” I tell her.
The smile on Katrina’s face quickly disappears when she hears the news. “That’s horrible,” She says softly, facing the ground. “Well you are welcome to stay here until you find a better, fit place for you to stay.” She says kindly.
“Thank you very much.” Peter says. The most violent person I’ve known in the few weeks we had initiate training, is now the most polite. What?
Christina and Will look at him like he’d grown a second head.
“What?” Peter says in defense.
I chuckle slightly.
“Let me show you to where you’ll be staying for the time being.” Katrina says, leading us up a flight of stairs.
There was a room with a row of beds. Just like in the Dauntless compound for the initiates.
“Hope this will be okay.” She says cheerily. “I know this isn’t Dauntless, like all of you are used to. But hopefully, it will be okay for now.”
“Thank you.” I say as kindly as I can.
“One thing though,” She says in the doorway. “It’s not that I don’t trust any of you, but Jack is weary of strangers staying here, especially Dauntless, no offense to any of you. But if it would not be too much trouble, we’d like for you all to testify under the truth serum to make sure the story of why you’re here is true.”
I had, had enough of serums. Since the one I had taken last made me a mindless slave in Jeanine’s complete control. But I mean, what choice did we have?
I look at Tobias for any sign I should refuse. But I see nothing. “Sure. We’ll do it.”
“Great. I’ll meet you here after dinner, and then we can get on with the test.” She says.
After Jessica leaves the room, I sit on one of the beds and Tobias sits on the one across from me, the beds close enough to each other that our feet could touch. “What kind of questions are they going to ask us?” I ask him.
“Most likely just what happened, why we left, stuff like that.”
A bit of fear pangs my chest. What if they asked about our relationship to each other? And then Tobias would see the real reason of the start of our relationship. But then I think, what would that serve? It had nothing to with why we were here. What would be the point?
“Are you all ready?” Katrina asks, appearing in the doorway.
I nod. ‘As ready as we’ll ever be.’ I think as we follow her out the door.
Tobias goes first, being the oldest as well as being a Dauntless trainer. Katrina injects him with a serum and sits him in a chair in the middle of the room.
“What happened at the Dauntless compound that caused you all to have to run away?” The administrator, Jane asks him.
He tells them about Jeanine Matthews and her plan for power. How she injected all of us with a serum with caused us all to be mindless drones under her power. An attack simulation to summarize it.
“What is your relationship with Ana? And has it always been a mutual thing?”
Oh dear lord. This definitely was not good.
He told them of course I was his girlfriend and that our relationship has always been mutual, that we have both loved each other from the start.
But I feared when my turn would come. This will not end well.
Jane continues questions until she’s heard all she wants to hear from him.
“Ana.” She calls.
My stomach was in knots as I pass Tobias on the way to the chair. He was still a bit dizzy, still slightly under the influence of the truth serum.
Jessica gives me the shot and I sit in the chair, the serum spreading throughout my body.
Asking me the same questions she had previously asked Tobias.
“What is your relationship with Tobias? And has it always been a mutual thing?”
“He’s my boyfriend. And no, it hasn’t. The first several weeks were completely fake, I only pretended to love him to keep him away from Tris. But as time went by, I began to love him for real.”
I look over and Tobias’ eyes meet mine. They show hurt, pain, and betrayal. And if my eyes were not deceiving me, I see a few tears run down his cheeks.
My heart sinks in my chest.
He mouths something to a guard at the door and walks out.
“That’s all. You can go Ana.” Jane says.
Yeah, now I can go. After my relationship has been completely wrecked.
Will he ever forgive me?
