At the end of the day, Anya waited for her Dad with her friends. Anita was humming while Rachel was using her colored pencils to beat out a beat on her pencil case. Anya bobbed her head back and forth, dancing a little as her friends laughed.
"Hey, want to listen to some music while we wait?" Rachel said, pulling out her Ipod. Anya and Anita both nodded. Rachel switched on her music and started playing her Disney playlist and blasted the soundtrack to Broadway version of The Lion King. Soon after, all three girls were singing their heads off and laughing. Anya kept dancing. She stopped when she heard her father's walking stick coming close to them. A smile spread across her face as she ran over to him and swung her arms open.Matt smiled, bending down and picking her up. He hugged her tightly. He had missed her and his day had been hard. He had lost a client and he and Foggy had had a fight before he left to pick Anya up from school. "Daddy, you're squishing me," Anya squealed. "Sorry Baby," he said, loosening his grip a little. He forced a smile as he looked at her.
Anya put her hands on both sides of his face. "Why are you sad, Daddy?" She asked with a serious expression on her young face.
"I'm ok, Anya."
The young Murdock shook her head. "No. You look sad. What happened?" She said. She put her head close to his. Matt closed his eyes. He held her tightly again. "Daddy had a bad day," he said finally. "But being here with you right now makes it better," he told her.
"I make you feel better?" Anya asked, looking at her Dad. Matt smiled a genuine smile and he looked at his daughter. His little light in an otherwise dark world. He honestly didn't know what he would do if he ever lost her. She was his whole world. He wanted to keep her safe from the evil in the world. Even though he knew that he couldn't. And that part made him sad. He wanted her to have a normal childhood. Something that he never got because of his accident.
He watched as Anya played with his hands. She frowned again. "Daddy, why do you have owies on your hands? Did you have a fall?"
Matt shook his head. "No. I didn't fall," he said. He had punched a wall after his fight with Foggy. But he wasn't going to tell her that. She always got upset when Foggy and he had a fight. Which made them both mad at them selves for upsetting one of people that they cared about most in the world.
"Hey, I have an idea," he said, clearing his throat and shaking his head. "Why don't we get some McDonald's tonight for dinner? A special treat?"
Anya smiled brightly. "I want nuggies!" She exclaimed.
