On the other side of the glass double doors that Liam leads me through is another waiting area. In my shocked filled haze, I dimly realize there are two chairs and a couch pushed up against the expanse of the wall. A couple of feet away from the chair was a desk where a woman—I assumed Liam's assistant—sat and behind her there was another glass door that led to Liam's office.
Liam's assistant looked up at us in surprise when we walked in. She was exceptionally pretty. Smooth, seemingly poreless skin and long brunette tresses. She looked a lot like a Barbie doll come to life with her wide, almond-shaped eyes and blush colored lips.
The woman stood up to greet Liam as he walked in, pulling my arm gently as he did.
"Mr. Hawke," she greeted him, peeking over at me in confusion.
"Gretchen, can you see to it that we're not disturbed unless it's urgent?" Even though it's a question, something about his tone is more of a demand.
"Yes, sir."
Her eyes are flickering back and forth between Liam and me and I see the tendrils of worry beginning to form in those eyes even though she keeps her face exceptionally calm. That's all it takes for me to understand. Gretchen likes Liam. Maybe she has just been watching him from afar, waiting for the day when she could make her move or maybe the two of them had a history. Either way, from one pining woman to another, I knew what longing looked like.
As stupid as it was, part of me was still pining for Simon. I knew he was never coming back but because of all the good memories we had created together both when we were just friends and when we were children, I couldn't find it in my heart to just let him go. I wanted him to come back to me.
I wanted both of them to come back to me, even when I knew that was impossible.
Neither of them cared about me or our friendship. They were getting married not even a year after my disastrous wedding.
How could they do something like this to me?
Before I knew it, I was inside Liam's office. It was exactly the kind of high-end office you'd see in movies and TV shows. A huge oak desk, a state of the art computer and a comfy looking executive chair that made me want to spin around in it and pretend I was some kind of business mogul. The steps connecting the desk to the rest of the room were made with perfectly polished mahogany wood.
Liam ended up leading me to a couch and he lets me slump down on it. I can feel his eyes on me for a little bit before he moves away.
"Are you okay?" he asks from his spot by his desk.
I forced myself to look up at him. His jacket had been removed and he was currently draping it over the back of his chair and setting down his briefcase.
I let out a bitter laugh before I can stop myself, pressing my lips together tightly to stop myself from crying. I had known they were together and to some degree—however small that degree may have been—I had accepted it. But knowing they were about to get married...
It was too much.
"Define okay." I don't even recognize the sound of my own voice, nothing feels real. I keep feeling like I'm going to wake up and everything will go back to the way it was. I've been thinking like that a lot these days. There are some days where I miss them both so much it hurts to breathe. There are some days where I hate them both so much I want to scream. I've been stuck in this constant cycle of hating them and missing them and I honestly think it's beginning to drive me a little crazy.
"Last night you said your fiancé left you to be with someone you cared about. I assume Miss. Harris is that someone you cared about." While he was talking, he moved to make his way to the couch and now he was sitting beside me. His posture was completely relaxed and there was...something about him. I couldn't put my finger on it but I just felt like he could really take care of himself in a fight. I don't know what made me think something like that in a moment like this but it had been thought nonetheless.
