"I'm not even fucking surprised," Martia declared, slamming her hand down on the table with unnecessary force, causing it to rattle and shake everything resting on it.
We were, as always, in my tiny little apartment, having dinner together the way we did most nights. An array of Chinese food cartons were surrounding us at the moment and one of the rice containers had tipped over after Martia had slammed her hand down all dramatically.
"Martia, you're going to make a mess," Kayleen lightly chastised her, picking up the overturned rice, looking relieved to see not much had spilled out and picking up the little bit that did.
"No, that bitch is the one making the mess," Martia grumbled, folding her arms across her chest and narrowing her eyes. "How in the hell could she think it's okay to ask Yvonne to come to her wedding? What kind of shit is that?"
Kayleen, who was now throwing away the rice she had picked up, sighed and looked over at me mournfully like it was her fault or something. Even Levi, who would normally be backing Martia up at a time like this, wasn't saying anything. He was looking at me carefully, his gaze far away.
"She's doing this shit on purpose," Martia ranted. "She sees that Yvonne's doing just fine without her and Simon but can she just leave her be? No. She has to try to ruin the happiness Yvonne has found." Martia jumped up startling me a little. "I'm going to beat that ho's ass again."
"Again?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"That night at Scarlet Kiss, the night you left, Levi and Martia got into an all-out brawl with Simon and Kate," Kayleen explained.
It was my first time hearing about it. Neither Martia nor Levi had mentioned anything about it.
I shook my head. "There's no need for you to beat her ass. I'm fine."
And even though the message Kate had sent to me via Kayleen had been quite painful at first, I was pleased to find that, after lying in the room that Simon and I had once shared, I was fine. I think that, for me, that room had represented an important part of our relationship and that's why I could never enter it. But once I had mustered up the courage to do so, I also had to admit to myself that the life I had once known and loved was gone. The two people I had once known and love had not only betrayed me, but they had left me behind as well. All those years of friendship, all those years of loving the two of them, just gone.
It was an odd feeling; to grieve over two people who were still alive. But, I felt like there was literally no other way to describe it. I was grieving the both of them. The two of them had meant so much to me and to have two pillars of my life suddenly wrenched out of it was gut-wrenching.
So, before Martia, Levi, and Kayleen came over, I had sat in my room and let myself grieve what I had lost.
So now, talking about it didn't hurt as much. Although it stung, the pain was numb. It was less like being hit by a fourteen wheeler and more like getting stung by a bee. Both of them were painful but in different ways.
"You're really fine?"
That came from Kayleen, who was just standing by the trashcan with her eyebrows furrowed in worry. Martia and Levi were looking at me, too, their expression a direct replica of Kayleen's.
I forced a laugh and said, "I'd have to get over it eventually, you know? I'm not doing myself any favors by getting hurt by every little thing they do forever. I'm not going to say it didn't sting because it did. But I need to move on."
And once I got this revenge I would do just that.
The three of them wore matching looks of relief and Levi reached over, grabbing my hand a squeezing, that familiar wide smile I'm used to finally lighting up his attractive face.
