The moment I stood in front of the building of Hawke Enterprises, I began to regret my decision to return Liam Hawke's coat to him personally for multiple reasons. The first reason was that I knew that Liam Hawke was undoubtedly a busy man. During the time we were scheduling his appointment for a consulation, he had to keep calling and pushing back the appointment that we'd set. Something was always coming up for him: changes in the stock market, another company trying to hone in on a business or a brand he'd had his eye on and so on and so forth. There was a reason why the guy was a billionaire. He worked his ass off. With a guy like that, you probably had to schedule a meeting with him days in advance just to get five seconds of his time and yet, here I was, just showing up.

My second regret was the fact that Simon and Kate worked here. It had completely slipped my mind when I decided to return his coat and I hadn't even thought of it on the drive here—I had taken a taxi since my hangover was way too intense for me to function properly let alone be behind a wheel. It was only a couple of seconds ago that I remembered Kate was the assistant of the Chairman of Hawke Enterprises and none other than Liam own father, William, and Simon worked in tech. Hawke Enterprises was forever trying to make their system more impenetrable than that of the Pentagon.

What in the hell was I thinking coming to a place that my ex-best friend and my ex-fiancé worked? Even if I had completely forgotten, I felt the extreme urge to bash my head into the revolving glass doors in front of me.

I wanted to turn around, call an Uber and Usain Bolt my ass out of here. If only it weren't for this stupid jacket and me having to apologize for my stupid drunk antics and having to thank Liam Hawke for his stupid kindness.

Sighing, I made my way through the revolving doors, convincing myself that I was going to be quick about this. Maybe I'd make a note and leave it with his secretary along with his coat, thanking him and apologizing while not having to stay too long.

The inside of Hawke Enterprises had a modern yet classic feel to it. The high ceilings with people scattering quickly like cockroaches after the lights have been turned on beneath these arched ceilings. The elevators—six of them side by side—were packed quickly. One moment, there wasn't anyone inside of them or there were people exiting and the next, the elevator was filled to its capacity with people. The elevators were those glass elevators I've seen in a lot of movies.

I only take a quick glance at the inside of this building, though, because my mind is mostly filled with panic, my eyes raking through the throngs of people passing me by. What if I end up running into Simon or Kate again the way I had last night? As bad as last night had been, at least my friends had been with me. When I think of what might have happened if Levi, Kayleen, and Martia hadn't been there...

But if I run into them now, they'll really see how miserable I am. Eight months since that day—eight months—and I'm the only one hurting and pining over a friendship we shared for over twenty-five years.

I hurriedly walked over to one of the receptionists. There were two of them on opposite sides of the room and both of them were wearing those "I'm-smiling-for-a-raise" smiles.

"Um, excuse me," I said as soon as I was close enough. "I'm here to return something of Liam Hawke's. He lent it to me and just left it, so..." I trailed off, shaking the coat in front of me gingerly.

The woman looked at me, then at the coat, then back at me. After a moment she smiled and said, "Wait, just a sec." She picked up the phone on her desk and dialed a few numbers, waiting patiently as it rang. "Gretchen? Yeah, is Mr. Hawke in?" Silence. "There's a woman here to return a coat she says belongs to him, do you want me to send her up?" More silence. "Okay. Will do. Bye."
